Farymann 12 hp Salt Water Cooling

My engine does not have a temperature gauge. I am not sure if I am getting enough water out the exhaust, how can I determine if there's enough water pumping. Additionally, how hard is it to change out the water pump impeller or service the water jacket, if that's an option? For a quick fix, can I simply add a thermometer gauge some where in on the engine, I noticed there is a little pet cock on the engine...not sure what its for. I would greatly appreciate some help with this. Mark Pelican 2-29 San Pedro (Cabrillo Beach)

One more thought, is it possible that the water pump belt is slipping and causing a decrease in the amount of water noticed at stern exhaust? ----- Original Message ----- From: markalan05 To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, July 21, 2006 10:42 AM Subject: [Cal_Boats] Farymann 12 hp Salt Water Cooling My engine does not have a temperature gauge. Hi Mark, There is a thermostat w/ connector on the top of the block in about the center. You should be able to see it from the port side. The water should pulse in a fair amount out the back. I'm in Alamitos Bay, so since you're local, you're welcome to take a look at mine. I'm at the end of gangway 30 and will be on the dock most of the weekend. I'll bring the 29 User's Guide and Farymann Instruction and Repair manuals on a CD in pdf. John, I appreciate it and would love to have a look. But I don't think I can this weekend.... In the mean time, I tightened up the pump belt to the 3/8" specification, discovered that my raw water filter has some gasket leakage and ended up buying a new filter housing. To be installed this afternoon. Next, week I will be examining the pump impeller, should do this regardless. The thermostat with connector, is the connector for electrical gauge? I would love to see the boat and get a copy of your CD with the pdf's. I am in the Holiday Harbor Marina in San Pedro on C28, there's about 4 or 5 Cal 29/2-29's on C dock. Lastly, we do a Wet Wednesday with Stan Luis a 78 year trophy winner Cal 29 and he would welcome one more. We almost always place! Please feel free to call me at 310-832-5992, Mark ----- Original Message ----- From: John Caldwell To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, July 22, 2006 8:00 AM Subject: [Cal_Boats] Re: Farymann 12 hp Salt Water Cooling Hi Mark, There is a thermostat w/ connector on the top of the block in about the center. John, The raw water filter was leaking because a bad casting cutting the gasket, so I changed out the filter and hoses. still no change. I have a fresh water flush hose hook up and I get plenty of water out the back with it connected. but when I open my thru hull and close the fresh water valve the volume drops to marginal. do you think it is a bad impeller or possibly the water jacket clogged? I appreciate any help I can get here. Hello Everyone Some Ideas My A30 was pulgged with chunks of crude in the water jacket. There are two cover plates on of the head remove and check for steady flow if not check the water jacket flow and head. The tee on the side of the engine could be clogged. The pump would have to have serious damage to the empeller. Remove side cover to inspect. To un-plug the water jacket on my boat had to pull the engine. When they installed the engine the port in the cockpit sole is to small to get the head off cylinder off ect. Small junks of metal corrision came out of the water jacket. It has one inlet and two outlets. And two o-rings for a seal to the head. I think a fresh water flush would help because the salt water would not be left in the head and water jacket. Thats about it good luck. masconsult <ma… [at] cox.net> wrote: John, The raw water filter was leaking because a bad casting cutting the gasket, so I changed out the filter and hoses. still no change. I had this problem with the A 4 on my Cal 34. Had I kept the boat I would have converted to fresh water cooling or, as a guy I used to know did with his engine, put a T in the intake from the thru-hull to the water pump and connect a hose to it to flush salt water out of the engine when he put the boat away. He would hook it up, turn on the hose, and run the engine much as you would do with an outboard after use. Check that T and manifold water jacket. Mike Kennedy Conquest Cal 40 ## 96

Thank all of you for the feed back. Yesterday, I removed the water pump. It went nothing like I originally figured. When I loosened the water pump adjustment bracket the nuts backed into the large pulley. Loosen the 2 adjustment arm bolts on the alternator Ease the large bolt Remove the belt Loosened the 4 bolts on the large pulley and slide pulley back Removed the water pump bracket nuts Disconnect the two hoses Remove water pump assembly Pulled off the Jabsco's cover plate (The impeller had 3 out of the 6 blades broken. Thank god they were in the pump, one was jammed in the water passage) Remove impeller debris (I used a curved ice pick tool and a surgical tweezers Remove shaft connection screw from the old impeller and install into new impeller The screw inserts and engages with the pump shaft during reinstallation. Sail magazine gave me a great tips: Old impeller pulls out with needle nose New one slides in best if you put a plastic tie around the blades in the proper direction of rotation Slide the impeller into the pump and the tie will slide right off. Don't forget to add a thin layer of faucet or pump grease to the inside surface and bolts. Lastly, If you have a fresh water flushing system, hook up the hose and turn it on. This way your new impeller will start off pumping primed with water. Hope this summary helps! They aren't that expensive or heavy and fixing one can be a pain when it goes out at an inconvenient time. When I had my Yankee 38 and my kids were little, we used to put them to bed on the boat on Friday night and power over to Catalina all night. We kept the boat in Dana Point and it was about 8 hours to get to Emerald Bay. One morning at dawn the temp gauge suddenly went up and we had to stop the engine. The fresh water pump had popped it's seal and all the coolant had run out into the bilge. Of course there was no wind and it was just getting light. I swapped water pumps and filled the system with water and off we went. I went down to the Isthmus the next day and got the guys in the mechanic shop to press on a new seal. It took a press to do it. I've provided a few spare parts to other boats on long races too. I know it's extra weight but not much. Impellers are easy but seals aren't. Mike Kennedy Conquest Cal 40 # 96
