Loud Hailer

First, let me state that I regard these things as among the most
annoying contraptions on the water. That said, I just bought a Uniden
UM 525 that comes equipped with one. I like it because of the WHAM 4
remote mike, DSC, and finally because it can be used as a fog signal.
If I ever use it to blab across a calm harbor, shame on me. That said,
I'm curious about what kind of speaker to use, and where to mount it.
My main headsail is a 150 roller furled unit, and I'm pretty sure it
would wipe any speaker off the front of the mast. I'm tempted to mount
it low on the mast, below a seldom used spinnaker winch. Any thoughts,
suggestions???

My suggestion, Fred, is that you simply buy a speaker and toss it in
some remote storage area. Then, if you really need to use it as a fog
signal, you can retrieve the speaker from below and tie it somewhere on
deck temporarily. Otherwise, you're going to be tempted to join the
powerboaters in hollering across quiet anchorages and other obnoxious
behavior. And even if you don't, you'll look like you do, with the
speaker permanently mounted.

Thanks, Chris. That's a great thought. I do the same thing now with my
current fog signal, a brass bell.
