Engine Ventilation
cal35_windsong2006-08-08 11:26
Over the winter I built an enclosure for the deisel engine on my CAL
35 to reduce the engine noise. I now want to add ventilation and I am
trying to figure out where to locate the vent holes. I am thinking of
two 3 inch vents one for intake and one for outflow. The outflow will
definately be outside the boat but I am wondering if anyone sees a
problem with having the intake come from within the boats cabin. I am
specifically thinking of my aft hanging locker next to the
companionway stairs. Any thoughts/opinions?

Im not sure that you should use your hanging locker as an intake vent. Diesel smells will eventually make their way in there and stink up your clothes as well as the wood in the locker. I also dont think you need two 3 intakes. Judging by the size of my Universal 5432 air filter intake, one should be fine. Why not locate that intake at some location right outside your new engine box. I suppose you could add a length of hose on the intake and make it serpentine to add some sound deadening.
Locating the outflow outside the boat seams fine. I suspect that when the engine is running, air will be pulled into all of your vents.
How effective was your engine box? Although I never found my engine noise to be that much of a bother, but quieter is always better.

I have always used two hoses, both 4 inch reenforced plastic, like dryer hose, with each
leading to a vent aft. Each vent has a cowl on it to keep rain and spray from going down
the hose. One hose is intake and the other has a blower. With a diesel, a blower isn't
needed but that is the basic layout I've used. The new engine box I had built for the Cal 40
is open at the rear. The sound insulation still keeps it pretty quiet. I still plan to run opne
hose aft to the vent.
There's a picture of the box on my photo site. It is very light with a frame that is 1 x 2 and
1/8 inch mahagony plywood sides. It is lined with the insulation West marine carries. It
has a heavier top that has a formica surface and will be a storage shelf.

I have also been looking for a way to install a ventalation system for the engine compartment in my Cal 33. Has any one installed a ventalation system in as Cal 33, if so I would like to hear from you on where you placed the vents.
The idea of the intake being inside and not out is a good idea.
