Congratulations Steve!
I would tend to keep doing the race so I can be chuckling under my breath
and aloud when away from the club. To me, there is too much satisfaction
"putting it to em", and not allowing them to get the best of me by chalking up a
"Win" in their column.

I had a somewhat similar experience with San Diego YC years ago. We had entered my
Yankee 38 in the Lipton Cup for Dana Point which had never before had a boat or crew
willing to enter. I had bought the boat from Gordy Frost, a neat old guy who hadn't had
much success with it and who had just bought a new Peterson 1 ton. We went down for a
practice session with our new crew for the cup regatta. We entered a SDYC race around a
rock off Rosarita Beach. It was an overnighter and in the morning, as we reached in to the
Pt Loma entrance, the only boats in front of us were Gordy's new aluminum 1 tonner and
Carl Eichenlaub's aluminum 2 tonner. We were third boat to finish in a fleet of about 30
and we were sailing the cast-off of the guy who was going to defend the Cup.
When I asked about my trophy as winner of Class B, I was told that since I wasn't entered
in the entire series, I didn't get a trophy. No mention of that when we plunked down our
entry fee. We finished about 4th in the Cup race. I've always had a mild impression that
SDYC wasn't happy with us. A few years later, in the Long Beach Race Week, we beat
Dennis Conner in Dust 'Em with my Choate 40. They tried to pinch up when we crossed
them on port early in the race and they protested us for not yielding to a starboard tack
boat. I had been hailing them to hold their course and they were almost head to wind
when they protested. Conner had the boat for sale and I think he had a prospective buyer
aboard. Anyway, I spent hours waiting for a protest hearing that began at midnight and
the crew had all finally drifted off. We lost and that cost us a first overall in LBYC.
Fortunately, LAYC has never been that way.
