I tie bowlines even if there are shackles on the lines (not that I've
ever used a top-climber).
Cheers

Wow, I've only done 3 in one day...
BTW, with the top-climber, CHECK THE SHACKLES EVERY TIME!
And use a safety line.
(Don't ask me how I know)

In case anyone is thinking of purchasing a Topclimber to go up their
mast it works great, but you have to be in shape. It is a good system if
you have reliable halyards to hoist the guideline. You have to be in
pretty good shape it can be a work out.

All,
I have a topclimber, and have used it a couple of times without any
excitement. :-)
There are a couple of small shackles that connect the ascenders to the chair
that can cause a problem if one is not diligent.
I agree with Charlie, tie a bowline or double figure eight know to avoid
relying on hardware to protect you from a fall. I am studying the shackles
in question to see how to safety wire and advert this issue.
YMMV

What is the opinion of the group regarding aluminum bolt on mast
steps? I've seen a lot around the marina and talked to another
experienced sailor, who preferred them. Advantages - disadvantages?
Do the holes drilled in the mast weaken it to any appreciable degree?
