Anyone Know Anything About Cal 40 FLAT TOP shown here?
rua842006-09-09 16:53
I found a photo that claims it is a Cal 40 Flat-Top. Funny. I was
daydreaming about one just yesterday. Here she is, reefed, in this
photo linked below. Looks like a 28, but the mast extends down into
the hull. The quarter berths look like a 28, not a Cal 40, but the v-
berth does not look like the 28. Go to:

Anyone seen this boat or have more photos of her?

White Squall still resides at Tacoma Yacht Club and still races. It was
originally owned by Gov Teats, who was a legendary local Puget Sound sailor.
He won many races with White Squall as well as with Stormy Weather, his
previous boat, which I believe was one of the outstanding Ben Seaborn
designs. When I was a teenager, we used to race against Stormy Weather and
later White Squall, in our Cal 30 #12 Allegro.
I believe Gov Teats actually died on this boat. A local race is named
after him.
The photo was taken during a Swiftsure Race. For those who don¹t know, a
race from Victoria BC out the Straits of Juan de Fuca to Swiftsure Bank off
the mouth of the Straits and back in. There is a 6 foot version of this
photo hanging in the Tacoma Yacht Club.
Other local sailors may know more about this boat.

I love the photo of White Squall. Looks like a hell of a ride. I
would love to see more photos of this boat if anyone has any. I was
dreaming about a Cal 40, a Cal 60, and a Cal 80 - all flush decks,
when I stumbled across White Squall. I want one!

this girl is with you, Bruce.....!!!
the clean lines of a flush deck boat are something to behold
(fighting with a rising sea). the bigger, the better (boat that is)!
and that water is where i want to take BB-54 sailing too. so
maybe you see why i take safety and structural integrity so
seriously. i am not now, nor never have been a racer. it the water
it's self that makes a worthy opponent i feel. though if i knew how
to race, i mite try my hand sometime......
fiver,
Master of The "BB-54"
one of the famous Cal-28 flush-decks

now resting outside my shop

(built like a Battleship; sails like a Sub......)

New Cal 28 Flush Deck Owner Has Question re: Tiller to Wheel Conversion
Bruce Stirling2006-09-10 21:15 UTC
I just received an email from a man who just bought a 1964 Cal 28 flush
deck. I urged him to join this group. Meanwhile, he had a question I could
not answer. I directed him to a web site that does conversions, but I told
him the real pros were right here. I am sure he would love to hear from
someone, and I'd enjoy reading about the issue, too, although I think I will
stick with a tiller. I copied him on this email. This is what he asked:
" Ive been trying to up grade all of this old boat's electrical and Im
trying to find out if I can go from a tiller to a wheel with out spending 4
to 5 thousand dollars.
I love this old boat . Any help would be helpful.
