Engine access on Cal 29

All the Cal 29s I've seen have the galley on the starboard side, which means access to the engine is really good from the front and sides. Not so on our Cal 2-29. We have the galley configured a bit different, which makes access to the engine really tough. (see this image via link http://i1.tinypic.com/2ldeero.jpg ) and you'll get the idea. I gather very few of these layouts where made and as we were told by the salesperson, Cal was experimenting with different layouts as they were getting ready with the Cal 31 production. We do love the layout, but I tell you... getting to the engine is quite a task. It took us 25 years to finally wire lights to the engine compartment to see everything. As you can see from the picture, we have to take the steps out and reach in, then you can't see what you're doing. Crawling into the starboard lazzerette is always fun too. I'm afraid one of these days I won't be able to get out. :) Really, the only access to do anything is on the port side and that's not exactly easy either. I don't think many of these layouts were made. Anyone else have this issue with their Cal 29? Gregg 1978 Cal 2-29 (#1008) Chaconne Puget Sound <http://i7.tinypic.com/24ziwlg.jpg>

Looks like a squeeze, alright. On a Columbia of similar size and layout, the access was from a hatch on the cockpit floor, but I believe the floor was wider than on a Cal 29. If you went that way, I imagine the issues wd be framing to retain strength, and watertightness. I know that Half Hitch has this arrangement, although I don't know her hull number or year without searching for some of Dan's emails. Hello List, Just wanted to drop some of the old timers a line and give you an update on Bob & Karen. Carol and I stopped in Thursday to Punta Gorda and met up with the 2 of them. They wanted to pass a hello to all. They have fully recovered from hurricane charley. There house looks wonderful and they are both doing well. They purchased a cute little Compac and they brought their Mainship down from Connecticut. I helped Bob move around his battery on the mainship, being the petite individual that I am it took my 2 seconds where it would have had him at it all day. All in all they were very good and missed talking to everyone. Roger, drop them a line. I told them all I knew, but I know they'd like to hear from you as well. Take care, Rich and Carol

Thanks for checking up on them for us all, Rich - I will definitely get a note off to them. I really love those two. They are just genuinely great people. Sure miss Bob's comments on the list. Thanks again! \Rog Cal 29+ #1 Swiss Navy Cal 2-30 #77 St. Lori's Comet
