Hi, Timmo. Think you about have it right. Got a CAL 25 racing
associate who bought a CAL 40 for about $26-27K 5 years ago. I'm sure
he's in 5 digits by now. Boat has yet to sail.
A little history.
Belle Aurore was in rebuild in 1993-1994 when Bill Lapworth came to our
CAL 25 brunch in Annapolis. Bill went to visit the Belle Aurore job. A
few stories in that for later telling.
Belle Aurore owner Larry Askew offered me the boat in 2001 for $135K.
Seems the boat had $50K in racing sails on her. I thought the price
high, but didn't dicker. Ended up getting a different CAL 40 for $75K
plus. Boat had just raced Annapolis Bermuda, and had a lot of extras
and good sail inventory. Just spent $23K on new engine and engine box.
5 digits is the gig.
I donated the old engine block (4-107) to the CAL 25 friend above to
help him save money. Don't know where the whole thing stands at the
moment.
Cheers
Charlie

I had seen it before but hadn't taken a good look. I looked at all his
pictures. That seems
to be a good price and a 2000 Awlgrip paint job is worth a lot. It would
be of interest to
know how old the diesel is and whether the spar is original. It needs
some cosmetics
inside but is not bad and the price seems good.
Go for it.

Reggie, one head is enough on most 40 footers, why would you need a more
heads?
c-40's have plenty of head room - when they in proper sailing form,
healed over 20-30 degrees..
or maybe you need the Cal 46 with 6' 5"?? and two heads *fore and aft."

the 6'5"does it. Unfortunately it is hard to find in an older boat unless
you look at a Columbia 34 or a pan oceanic.

how about a Columbia-43 bubble-top?
that thing is cavernous inside with headroom to spear, and a pretty
good flush-deck too. it would have been my choice if money grew on
trees....

Thanks for the URL! That boat has one of the sexiest rear-ends I've
seen in a long time. Beautiful boat, but she obviously looks like
she's ready for racing. It would probably be sacrilegious to even
think about replacing some of the snap-on canvas covers with wood.
Do all of your Cal 40's look stripped down like this? Great photos.
I can see why the guy just wanted to go aboard and play his ukelele.
I forgot to wear my bib. I'll be cleaning up for some time to come
now. Makes me want to sell the house and get the $33,000 boat and
sail her to Costa Rica, where they can make her look like the "cheap
one" muy barato. Sounds like the five digits are in the motor and in
the sails. What? No outboard plug in that sexy rear-end?
Thanks,
Bruce

The canvas is nice but wood is easy and can always be removed if a race is coming up. My
Choate 40 had zippered canvas enclosing the head. It was not easy to get my wife
interested in cruising on it.

I don't know of many with gold plating but that one looks nice to me. I have not finished
the interior in white as much of that has done. Most of mine is varnished mahogany. I have
seen several much more stark than Belle Aurore.

Mechanicals are expensive. They last however and are usually a good investment. That
boat is a good choice for a local cruiser who is not going offshore although I would
obviously check out the spar and engine/drive train.
Sails depreciate and few Cal 40s are going to be racing around the buoys these days. For
Transpac you want a main, blast reachers and spinnakers. Timm has far more up-to-date
info than I do.

I don't know how Columbia's have stood up over time. Is there an
owner's group ? That would be a sign they have. I had a friend who
worked for Yankee Yachts and had worked for Columbia. He did not have
good things to say about the quality control. Yankees were built like
the proverbial brick establishment but were too heavy. Jensen got it
about right, at least by the evidence we see today.

Cal 27 T/2 "Knot Ready" took first in their fleet at the All Island's Race
on Flathead Lake yesterday.
And it appears also first place for the season in the Del's Tuesday night
series, and first place in the Poets Friday night series at North Flathead
Yacht Club
