Chris, The safety device is an oil pressure switch that cuts out the fuel pump at low oil pressure. That at least stops the gasoline pumping when the engine stalls for any reason. The switch is by passed during starting. If the engine keeps running and you have a leak between the pump and the carburator then it will continue to pump but so will a mechanical pump. I had a very low seepage of gas on my Atomic four enough to smell after a few days I finally gave up looking for the leak and installed an electric fuel pump kit from Moyer which comes with the oil pressure switch and instructions. No more smell of gas. John Kwak With a Cal 2-30 "Mark Twain" for sale. There was a discussion of electric pumps and gas engines. The problem arises when there's a leak downstream of the pump--it'll merrily fill your bilge with gasoline. I seem to recall some safety fix but don't remember what it was. Chris Campbell
