New Cal 39 Owners!
Bob Walden2006-09-14 15:41 UTC
Hi all;
Myself and boat partner Steve Rosenblum have just bought a 77 Cal 39 TR in
Marina del Rey. We're pretty excited to have a boat of this pedigree! And
it's in really great shape, with a new 40hp yanmar, new hull/deck joint, new
standing rigging, and really nice custom interior. On the sea trial, she
sailed like a dream in 3-8 knots of breeze, even with her exhausted
(original?) sails.
The seller and the broker were perplexed by questions like "what series 39
is this" and so forth. The HIN on this boat is CAB390030277. From this I can
tell it's Cal Boats, model 39, built in 77 I think the "02" means it was
laid up in Febuary--is that right?. What's the "003" mean? Is that the hull
#?
The boat's current name is "Joy Sea". It was apparently dontated to the sea
scouts last year and sold at auction to the current owner, who had it for
less than a year and did nothing with it. The PO by report is in his late
eighties and in a nursing home in SoCal somewhere.
If anyone can supply any info about this boat's model or on the boat itself,
I'd be very grateful. What I'm looking for would be to nail down the
specific model series (-1, -2, etc). And getting a copy of the original
brochure and/or owner's manual (which I assume would be more extensive than
the 6 typed pages for the 27!) would be wonderful.
Thanks,
Bob Walden

My Guess is that since your CAB format does not have a letter M then it was accounted as a straight year Hull ID vs a Model year format
A Model Year format is CAB for CAL, 39 for lenght 0030 or the 30th of this model built, thenthe letter M for Model year format, then 77 for the year it was build and then a letter telling the month of manufacturing
I think the year was kept form August to July? A would be August, B September....H is March, etc
Hopefully someone in the list can confirm this

A recent /Good Old Boat/ magazine article addressed the various ID
number systems. They have changed some over time. I don't have it here
at work but I think it was the latest issue. or at least one of the last
three.

Thanks everyone so far. Regarding the HIN, its in the same format as my 73 Cal 27, so I guess Jensen/Cal used this format from 73 through 77 at least.
The boat value guide at www.nadaguides.com shows Cal 39s for 1971-1973, then 1978 and onwards until Cal boats go out of production. Does anyone know how many 39's were built, and what years? And when the original, mkII, mk III, etc were built? At this point I'm guessing the originals were the 71-73 boats, mkII perhaps started in 77 (ours being #3). Does that make sense?
This boat's interior does not look like the layout shown at the old Cal site (http://pages.sssnet.com/go2erie/cal39.htm). We have the galley on port, and a nav station/quarterberth on stbd. The quarterberth is generous but definitely not a double. And there's no aft head, only one forward, on port. Anyone know which version this one is? It looks like the Hunt design I think, which started in 88 according to a Perry review I read.
If there's any other Cal 39 owners out there who have info on the design or any of the original liturature, please contact me.
We're getting some work done on the boat (installing radar, holding tank, new instruments, a few other small things) and then bringing her up here to her new hope port in Richmond next month.
And BTW I can't say enough good things about the yacht industry in MDR. What a bunch of great people! We bought the boat through Bristol Yachts, and Marybeth there has been wonderful to work with. She in turn handed us over to Matt Schulz for the survey, Victor at the boatyard, Dave Kirby for electronics, and Chino to do all the installs and upgrades. All great, friendly, professional people. Great place to buy a boat.
Just wish it was up here now! I'll be going back down weekend after next to check on her and do some pre-delivery work. Will have to sneak her out for a sail too.

Bob,
Congratulations.
I think you have Cal 2-39 hull no 3. (Unless it's a tri-cabin layout
then it's 3-39. Do you have two heads?)
Your HIN number format is different than the 6 '78-'80 2-39's that
were at Caltopia.
For guidance you might try http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin
The reference describes two HIN number formats. You apparently have
the first and the other, newer 2-39 have the second
CAB390030277
CAB = manufacturer ID
39003 = serial no -- hull #3
0277 = Feb 1977
For reference, the other format is (for my boat)
CAB10018M78C
CAB = manufacturer ID
10018 = serial no -- hull #18
M78 = model year 1978
Model year month (A=Aug of the previous year) = Oct 1977
It looks like Bangor Punta/Jensen was cranking out 2 per month at this stage.
The original Cal 39 was manufactured in the early 70's
The series started in '77 included the 2-39 and 3-39, same boat
different interior layout (my owners manual covers both)
The series started in the late 80's was re-design-update by Raymond
Hunt and built at the O'Day factory on the East Coast. This is the
one sometimes referred to as the Cal 4-39 but I think their
literature simply says Cal 39. (I'll check. I have brochure somewhere.)

Thanks Duane and Jim;
Great, that makes sense. This is a single-head layout. I did find the
scanned brochures at the ftp site at SailJazz, and the layout matches
layout 1 in the brochure.
Anyone know where #1 & 2 are?
If anyone has scanned the manual, it's worth a case of (good) beer! Or
I'll be glad to scan it myself and make it public, if you'd care to
loan it to me for a few days.

Bob,
I looked at a '77 in Newport Beach in '91 called Tanstaysail --
didn't get the HIN. It could be #1 or #2.
I've got a manual but it's in Emeryville - 'can run a copy next visit.
Enjoy your trip up. Be sure to stop at Morrow Bay Yacht club -- very
nice people. (You need not be a YC member)
Since I had the oldest boat at Caltopia and it has some differences
form the others, here are a couple of comparison questions.
The other Cal 2-39's have a fiberglass furniture pan with metal
glassed-in reinforcement in the setee areas.
The other boats, #'s 25 and up, had gelcoat vertical surfaces on the
setee fronts.
Marlyn has wood on these surfaces with an aluminum C-beam weldment
behind (look inside the setee hatches.)
I'm curious to see if you have a similar structure.
Marlyn has a big lump (about a foot deep) of lead shot & resin
ballast (I estimate 400#) added just in front of the rudder post. It
looks like hard cottage cheese. Do you have that? None of the other
Cal 2-39 have this.
Also a caution: Marlyn had a black iron fuel tank that I had to
replace with an aluminum one.
You should check to see if you tank was replaced; if not, carefully
check for rust.

Duane

Hi Duane;
Jim Williams is mailing a copy of the manual to me, thanks tho.
Re Morro: yeah, we'll have to stop somewhere. Haven't been in Morro before so it's high on my list.
I'm going down again next weekend and I have to open up the setee and v-berth to see where to put a holding tank, so I'll take some pics then. I think I recall the setee supports were wood.
Re lumps, nope, smooth as a baby's bottom down there. Wonder why they did that-more ballast? Wouldn't have thought these boats would need that.
Re manual, Jim Williams is fixing me up already, thanks tho.
Re morro, yep, that sounds like a good spot to get more fuel and I've never been there from the sea, so it's on the list.
Re setee supports, I think we have the wood facing, I'll see next weekend.
Re lump, I'll have to look. The hot-water heater is right in front of the rudder post. I don't recall seeing it when looking through the aft locker hatch. I think the surveyor would have mentioned it. Why do you think they did that?
Re fuel tank, ours is under the port setee and looks to be aluminum. I asked the yard in mdr to inspect it and they just called to say it was full of gunk and sediment and they're cleaning it all out. Where was your tank at originally? There's a big-ass wooden box behind the engine, seems like a tank frame but solid. There's no filler caps for it. I'm assuming its an old fuel tank. Considering replacing it with a fuel bladder for longer trips.
Thanks Duane! It will be cool to meet up sometime after we get her up here--maybe a 39er raftup in clipper cove?

Cal-34 fuel tank
walter2006-09-16 02:15 UTC
I am replacing the fuel tank in my '70 Cal-34. I have purchased a new
plastic 24 gallon tank (ABYC approved, etc.). As does not fit into the
cut-out in the floor pan below the cockpit, I am making a wooden base
for the new tank to sit upon and it will be strapped down, of course. I
am wondering if there should be any cushioning between the plywood and
the tank.
Also, I am moving the fill point from the middle of the cockpit up to
one side of the boat. What are alternate fill points on other Cals? I
would prefer to have a shorter fill hose to the tank but I see no other
solution.
Has anyone changed out their fuel tank with something than original design?
Caveats?
