backstay tensioner
Robin roberts2006-09-22 04:10 UTC
Having rebuilt the hull and mechanicals due to hurricane Ivan, (the old westerbeke moves her along once again), we are now ready to raise the mast once again.
We have been looking toward adding a backstay tensioner, but our boat, (77 Cal 3/34 hull #56) has a single back stay.
We have been playing with the idea of adding a cascading 2:1/6:1 system - high strength wire through a single block, leading to two triple blocks, bottom with cam.
Now, for those of you in the know,
Having never employed this type of system on a boat of this size (all others have had yoke type tensioner), will this setup provide the strength required, or will we need to add backstay flanges and attachment points at the corners of the transom, and go to a yoke type tensioner?
We still need to purchase sails and rework the interior, so expense plays into everything, but safety and security comes first.
I look forward to your thoughts on this.
Many thanks
Rob

When I rerigged the Cal 40, I traded my old Kreuger hydraulic adjuster to Minney's. I was
getting new rigging and bought a new Navtek adjuster. The Kreuger adjuster was reliable
and I understand there is someone who rebuilds them if needed. Rudy Kreuger, who
owned Kumu at one time, is long gone but his adjusters are good and there are probably
some around for good prices. I had one on my Yankee 38 and it stood up beating into 60
knots so it was pretty bulletproof.
