Anchorage in Sta Bar Bar Ah.

I just accidentally bought a sailboat on Ebay yesterday. Be carefull
when you bid, you may actually get that boat!
It's a 28' Yankee, the price: $3050. Yankees are premium blue water
boats, I don't know what I'll do with her, but I'm sure I can sell her
for more than what I paid. She's at the anchorage at Santa Barbara.
What's the deal there? Is it free?
Can you anchor for as long as you want? Is it fully protected? I guess
I'll find out when I go up to see her and when the owner calls me.
Good thing I have a sturdy Sevylor dingy to go out there. Uggggh. What
have I done now? or, should eye say, AarrRRggggGGGhhHH?
Any calboats members going to be around the S.B. Marina this weekend?

The Yankees were all built like the proverbial outhouse. The 28 was not my favorite as I think
it has a headroom problem. However, you have it and all the Yankees were S&S designs and
very well constructed with details like tapered masts. I suspect there is a Yankee users group.
I think I've seen a Yankee 30 group. Why don't you see if one is on the internet and that
group might help in finding buyers.

Sorry. I'm no help with Santa Barbara.

Late reply, been out of town, Jerry.....
Marina 5, or more aptly titled "The Fool's Anchorage" is no place to leave
your boat on the hook as we come into fall and winter. Make it a priority
to get up here and get your new boat off the hook and safely into a slip. A
guest slip in Santa Barbara can be had for a couple of weeks before it
starts getting prohibitively expensive, but you can't rent a slip without
"buying" it from someone (25-20K for a 28,) so you'll need to go south at
least to Ventura or Channel Islands and might as well just sail her on home.
Read Richard Henry Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast" for some almost 200
year old accounts of slipping anchor off an exposed roadstead. It's just as
accurate today. Also a really great read.
I went down to the beach a few years ago for breakfast and counted 9
sailboat masts ashore. I decided to check them out after I ate, but an hour
later there were only two. For a split second I thought they had been
successfully pulled off the beach, but for only a split second. It was
quite a scene of destruction. The only piece left of one of the boats was a
corner of the Atomic 4 sticking out of the sand.
Every year sees boats wash ashore.
