Welcome to the group, where will you be keeping your boat next season? I sail out of Erie Basin on a 2-27 with BHSC. Looking at the PHRF for your boat we would probably be sailing against one another if you enter the Wed. night group. As for your questions this group has great knowledge on everything associated with the CAL's of all sizes and years and in a very informal way has become the defacto class association, a lot of the owners manuals (often they consisted of a few type written pages) can be found at www.SailJazz.com <http://www.sailjazz.com/> under file server. Sail dimensions can be found on the Baconsails.com web site, as well as used sails. In Buffalo I have found that Haarstick has great sails for our conditions, but they ain't cheap. Specific answers to your questions on the 2-29 will come from other owners on the list, but assuming it sails like the 227 a 155 genoa is going to be your base sail. Last Sunday when the wind piped up to a steady 21 with gusts to 37 I raced in the river with a 120 and a reefed main and got the boat up to a sustained 7 knots. These are good stable boats that love light air, tight reaches with a chute and flat water. Going to weather in choppy seas its hard to win a race but in under 7kts or over 20 they do well. Good luck with the boat give us more info on sail number engine etc. John Boyce CAL 2-27 #650 Gotcha Again _____ From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of mcgsyl Sent: Monday, September 25, 2006 4:01 PM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: [Cal_Boats] cal 2 -29 new owner needs racing tips Hello to all members and particularly owners of 2-29 boats.I sold my j-24 which I raced for 20 years and took an interest in a 1973 cal 2- 29.I am interested in local knowledge as to best jib size for going to windward, rigging tension, info on racing a 2-29,sources for purchace of good used saikls and or recommendations for reliable well priced new one,s.We do not have an original owners book or sail deminsion. RE: [Cal_Boats] Cal 28 Original Brochure and Original Cal 28 Owner's Manuel Found Here

I just scored an original Cal 28 brochure from another Cal 28 owner, Wayne Gillikin, who was kind enough to share. He may already be a member of this group. If he is, thanks again, Wayne! The brochure is found online here: http://www.stirlinglaw.com/cal28/cal28brochure.htm . I believe I already posted the original Cal 28 owner's manuel here, too: http://www.stirlinglaw.com/cal28/cal28docs/ - provided courtesy of Cal 28 owner, Del Wiese. Do not know if Del is a member, or not. Thanks, Del! Missing cover page. Bruce Stirling Gangfurd Cal 28 - Hull 82 http://www.stirlinglaw.com/cal28

Frank - As a couple of other members have already said, "Welcome to the group!". I've been in "lurk mode" a lot lately, but will say that there is a lot of great contributors on this list who have a tremendous history and knowledge of the boats - and lots of great "how-to-ideas". I regularly learn or re-learn something when reading the posts. The manual for a Cal 29 can be found on ftp://ftp.sailjazz.com - look under the "manuals" directory. If you have a problem accessing it, email me and I will email you a copy direct. There are a number of sites for sail info (basic I,J,P,E dimensions) - www.cast-aways.com is one site. Recently I have started using the www.sailrite.com and then looking under the "Sail Kit Pricing" button the right. It actually provides more detailed info on the sails for the boat - sometimes including spinnaker and storm jib sizes as well as mainsail, working jib and genoa sizes.
