Double Stern Rail and Rail Seats

My wife admired all the people seated in their stern seats mounted on their stern rails the last time we were out. She said she would like to have them on the Cal 28, which has a single stern rail. Looks like you need a double rail to properly attach the seats. What's the general consensus on these seats? It doesn't look like the ideal place for weight in the cockpit. Anyone make this change on their boat? Would it look funky moving from the single rail to the double? Is there a relatively cheap source for double stern rails out there? How about the seats. They look easy enough to make. Thanks for your thoughts. Bruce Stirling Gangfurd Cal 28 - Hull 82 http://www.stirlinglaw.com/cal28

What is it about women and those stern seats? My wife has talked about installing them on our boat. We chartered one of them Benes in the BVIs, and it had stern seats. I admit that they are a nice place to rest and be able to see everything. But Benes have a big wide back end. Lapworth was never big on big back ends, so there is quite a bit less room to use them effectively. Hunt's designs are a bit wider, but not by much. I've got double rails on my stern pulpit, so it could be done, but I'm not eager to clutter up my fairly small cockpit and helmsman space. My guess is that you could still do it with a single rail, just depends on where the vertical post is since you'd have to tie into it to stabilize the seat. The other attachments could be stainless straps that hang from the rail and strap to the seat. Good luck with all that. Jack Cal 31

Someone on th elist added tham to a Cal 31. The 31 has a relatively small cockpit so I believe the stern rail was re-designed so that the Mai Tai seats were suspended outside the cockpit. No sense giving up any cockpit space! I've got'em. Wife loves 'em. Cost about $200. Go to www.zarcor.com or check at a major boat show. Bruce, I know this is not a 28, it’s a 33, as someone else stated we had the second rail. It was an easy mod, home made with ¾” starboard, cut to match the rail contours and cockpit coaming. The seats actually get crowed by the lifesling, dingy motor and grill. And the bimini is nice during July and august sunshine. They are a great perch if you don’t like sitting facing backwards. Visibility is great as well See attached photo. Kirk, Simply beautiful. That's the Cal-Cabo Rico look I've dreamed about. Where was the interior work done? Beautiful. If I left my wife see your photos, I'll be hearing about it for the rest of the year! The photos could take her mind off of the Beneteau she's dreaming about, though. Very nice, indeed! Thanks for sharing the photos. All other lurkers in possession of Cal-Cabo Ricos need to submit their photos. These kind of publicized photos will drive up the price of all Cal Boats! Very nice. Mike and Bruce, Thanks for the kind words. You see Footloose as I purchased her earlier this year. My understanding from the previous owner, is that the owner he bought it from was a cabinet maker, who did the work. Places where one would think to skip - underside of shelves - were done. The time commitment must have been incredible. The owners through the years kept nearly all the paperwork. Manuals and receipts for equipment long gone, berthing slips from where she visited, even the original Permanent Vessel Reg assigning the CF #'s dated Dec 1, 1975. Kinda of a connection back through the years. Until I moved her to Channel Islands Harbor (and Ventura West this weekend) she had been in San Diego. When I get the time I'll scan the owners manual and upload. I have the westerbeke manual and I think the vdrive trans too. They would take longer to scan ;> Kirk --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "rua84" <bruce@...> wrote: > > Kirk, > > Simply beautiful. i just had a look at "FootLoose" and that is quite a Boat! i wouldn't imagine that the wood trimmed port-lights are stock on that boat. nor the custom handrails, mid-boom sheeting, or the nice compass binical. i also noted the outfit of electronics the boat had. *Furuno* radar with self-leveling antenna mounting. a nice *NT* Magellan chartplotter. and was that an autohelm trydata on the starboard side in the aft end of the cockpit that i saw? and looking at the mast-head; the standard wind-speed and direction remote sensors. and now, the inside of the cabin simply must be mentioned. Very, very nice....... fiver ************************** --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "rua84" <bruce@...> wrote: > > Kirk, > > Simply beautiful. Hi, Pretty much got it. That is an Raymarine 4000 autopilot. The Furuno is a 16 mile 1623, the chartplotter is a Magellan 6500. Signet depth and boat speed. She doesn't have wind speed and direction though. OTOH she does have a vacuflush head crammed into what was the port side hanging locker, and CNG stove/oven, which makes senior management (my wife) happy. Mostly I am overjoyed to be a boat owner again. Especially a Cal. It's been almost 25 years since my first boat - 1965 Cal 25. And nearly 15 years since my last one, an Ericson 35.
