A Question for The Group....?
Sl… [at] aol.com2006-10-12 08:51 UTC
Greetings......
in evaluating the basic types of steering systems that i can build
and install in my Cal-28 when i re-build the old-girl; i find that i am looking
at five sort of systems. some of which are just modifications on another. i
know that there are other's, but i do not wish to use them because i am only
looking at the strongest and most fool-proof.
firstly, there is the standard *hydraulic* three hose system that uses
lite oil. then there is my personal favorite sort of hydraulic system called
*Hynautic*; which uses a 50-50 mix of distilled water and ethylene glycol. i
like this system for both helm and engine-control.
then there is a system using roller chain and steel rod (not cable).
this is connected to a *Quadrant* a-top ones rudder-post.
after that we have the rack & pinion system where the Quadrant has a
gear-rack built into it. and there is a pinion-gear that engages the rack and
is connected to the helm.
lastly there is the worm steering gear. and that speaks for it's self.
the question that i am asking of The Group is this;
if any of You are using any of these systems. i would like your
feed-back and or opinion on your steering system, and how you like it (or don't).
Thank You in advance.
