Two big Cals

Cal sailors and fans:
It's armchair sailing season for those of us on the middle coast. I
found a couple of older books with Cal photos in them.
One is the _Spyglass Rigging Guide_ from 1978. It shows several pages
of photos of rigging details on Cal 39, "White Bird II." The text notes
that production began in 1977 and the photos are credited to Jensen Marine.
The other is entitled _Cruising Mid-America_. It's one of those harbor
guides. On the cover is a photo of a Cal 40 in a place that all North
Channel sailors will know, the pool in Baie Fine (Bay Finn). It says
it's a boat owned by Carter Sales and Skip Grow named "Winsome."
Are these boats around still?

Winsome was hull # 42 and owned by Detroiters Carter Sales and Skip Grow. It is not
currently listed in the owners' list and I don't know where it is. I did find a couple of old
Cal 40s on my recent trip to the east coast. I was in Mystic library when a guy came over
and started talking about Cal 40s he had sailed on. From him I got the name of a boat that
is now in Texas being restored. This guy had sailed on it in Puerto Rico when it was called
Laughing Lady. I also learned the location and current status of Artemis, a 40 that had
sailed in the Bermuda Race in the 60s. It is owned by one of the Cal 25 sailors we raced
when Charlie Husar took me along as ballast last Sunday.
Thanks, Charlie.
