Another "Project" Question for the group
Tom Tilley2006-10-13 22:56 UTC
I getting ready to install a second compass in the cockpit of my 9.2 - and it occurs to me that I want/need to do a neat job of cutting the hole in bulkhead. The compass is a Contest 101 - so it takes a good sized hole.
Does anyone have a recommendation about whether I am better off getting one of the "hole-saw" drill attachments chucked in my electric drill, one of the adjustable hole cutters - probably with a manual drill, or some other method that they believe works well for cutting a round hole with minimal effort?
Thanks -

buy a good quality hole-saw.
that is what i do every time i have a hole to cut. i get the sort
that uses the same arbor for every size. i have most of the sizes
now. also, it is very importent to put masking tape on the glass
surface in the area where the hole is to be cut! then draw in pensel
on the masking tape. drill a pilet hole for the center drill in the
hole-saw. then have at it *carefully*.....
fiver.....

One more trick to hole-sawing if you have finished surfaces on both
sides. Stop drilling the hole partway through, then go to the other
side if it's accessible. Do the tape trick on that side too, then
start drilling and finish from the other way.
This way you get a clean cut into each of the surfaces instead of
ripping out of the far side.

>Good advise given above. Note on hole saw size: If you cut too
small a hole. Either knock in a wooden plug, trim off excess,
center pilot drill and redrill or you can usually fit two hole saws
on the arbor-the too small size under the correct size. Advise stay
away from adjustable hole saws of all types. Guy

I use my drummel for things like this. It is nice to be able to adjust the speed on a dial rather than with the finger as the drill would offer.
The drummel is one of the best tools I have.

Which ever method you decide to cut with, be sure and tape both sides with masking tape. this will keep a clean un splintered edge on both sides.
A saber saw can also be used to make a clean hole. First drill a hole size above the blade, insert the blade and begin your cut.

I have a set of hole cutters that attach to a chuck mounted central hub with a thread that
screws into the cutter and a two posts that advance into holes in the base of the cutter to
prevent rotation on the hub. You buy the hub, which has a drill bit to make the pilot hole
and then buy the cutters you need. I have about six of them, the largest 4 1/2 inches. It
does a nice job with fiberglass. For smaller holes, I have a smaller hub. They have them at
Home Depot. They aren't cheap but do the job. The 4 1/2 inch cutter is about $25.
I wouldn't use an adjustable on fiberglass. They will work on plywood in a drill press but
aren't too easy to use freehand.
