moving mainsheet and traveler to cabin top
jenfreespirit2006-10-13 18:30
We're the newbies who just purchased a 68 Cal 34 in good condition in
Northern MI..we have not yet had it in the water. I have a question
regarding the mainsheet and traveler. As is, the traveler is on the
top of the stern cockpit seat...behind the wheel pupit. It appears
that in this location it might interfere with sitting behind the wheel
to steer the boat? Anyone had this problem? It also makes the
stern seating difficult to get to, possibly even unusable. I'm not
SURE that this will be a problem, since, like I said, we haven't even
sailed the boat yet, but it just appears to be in the way.
I have seen pictures of other Cal 34's of this vintage with the
mainsheet and traveler relocated to the cabin top. Will this cause any
performance issues? Has anyone out there had any experience doing
this? I'm not sure how it would interact with the companionway
slider... also would this interfere with adding a spray dodger?
Thanks for any insight!!

Is this _northern_ northern MI (i.e., UP) or _southern_ northern MI
(LP), or as we call it here in Traverse City and environs, northern
lower? Pretty complicated, isn't it?

My 2-34 has cabin top mid-boom sheeting. I came across a Cal 2-34
brochure with mid-boom sheeting photos. Practical Sailor's review of
the Cal 34 series indicates that for the 2-34 and 3-34 the rig was
changed. The boom is 3' shorter and the mast 2' taller. And mid-boom
sheeting was introduced then.
All that said, the PO did fit the boat with a dodger (and fully
enclosed stern I am told - like sailing in San Diego was Maine or
something :) The canvas is marginal, not all present, and has not been
on since I've had her. I took that hardware off to deal with another day.
The boom has three bails for the mainsheet blocks. Only two are used,
the most aft one not, presumably to clear the dodger. This has reduced
the mechanical advantage significantly. I've yet to decide what to do,
but I will likely replace the existing very worn mainsheet blocks, and
possibly the traveller and track if necessary to pickup the ability to
adjust the car w/o having to depower the main and move the pull-pins.
I'm not thinking having a dodger is better than having good main sail
control. But I'm in Santa Barbara :)
Several companies have traveller kits with loading specs. Garhauer
Marine makes heavy duty track, and track with risers.

I am attaching a link to the Cal Owners in BC. Check out the Cal history selection. Additionally, in some prior listee emails, there was mention of a flat top cal 40, there is a picture of one in the photos selection.
Its fun to find and pass on more Cal information.
