Chris,
I'm not a subscriber to Sailing.....but I do get 4 other sail related mags! I'd really like a copy of the edition with the Perry/Cal 40 article. Is that a current special edition, available at news stands, or was it published some time ago, or only available to subscribers?
The link on their web page for back editions is not working, so I've been unable to locate any info.
Thanks,
Rob

Cal sailors:
The magazine Sailing has published a special 40th anniversary issue. The publisher, Bill Schanen, has a column discussing their status as the longest and oldest in various categories, but mostly addressing the changes in sailing, the activity, over the last 40 years.
To celebrate the event, they asked Bob Perry to pick and review one notable boat over 30 feet from each decade. The '60s feature--what else--the Cal 40. In his usual style, Perry notes the various design characteristics and data, and discusses what those mean for the vessel's behavior. He concludes:
It's hard to grasp the significance of Lapworth's design without having it surrounded by the rest of the 1963 racing fleet. In 1963 racing boats were all over the map in terms of design and many of them were not good boats. The Cal 40 has endured as an efficient and handsome design. This modest appearing design changed the direction of racing boat design forever.
My theory is that sailors should subscribe to Sailing just to get Bob Perry's views on the new boats as they come along, because his regular contributions are a running education in boat design. This special edition is a good place to start. They've got brief articles on "my best day of sailing" by people from Olin Stephens on down the age continuum, and a good photo essay on "the beauty of sail."

The issue just came out--it's the November '06 issue. It was in my
mailbox yesterday. It may take a few days to appear on newsstands. The
magazine has always had a large format, although it downsized very
slightly a few years back because of changes in standard paper size or
something. If you don't find it, holler, and I can make a reduced-size
photocopy.

Just got the Sailing Magazine yesterday. You can buy it at a newsstand. Great article on the
Cal 40. It probably is available on their website.

Thanks , Chris, for the offer. I'll look on my local newstand before I bother you.
Again, greatly appreciate the heads-up regarding the article.

It's not a bother to me but it would probably be a bother to you to
read the reduced-size print. Besides, the magazine page has a color
heading at the top so the Cal 40 drawing has the sail symbol in red, a
cool touch. And it's a nice issue that you could keep (or the page
would be suitable for framing).. But let me know if you want a
photocopy and I'll zap one out.
