Chris - I've had reasonably good success using one of the citrus based cleaners to break down the glue residue. It seemed to take a while, but then I was getting to the limits of my patience after the acetone didn't clean off the glue on my sail the way that I expected it to - so it may not have really taken as long to do as I thought. Acetone is not not quite the solvent we sometimes think it ought to be. I know that in situations of greases, it does next to nothing. I tried cleaning dissassmbled winches with acetone with no result. However, WD-40 melted the winch grease in a second. Now I keep a gallon can of WD-40 handy. Wonder what that would do to sail numbers? Charlie (and Company) I found the best thing for degreasing winches is the stale gasoline that several people on the list were trying to get rid of. I've soaked my winches in that (and engine parts as well) and they come clean really well. :-) Scott >From: "Husar Charlie" <hu… [at] bah.com> >Reply-To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com >To: <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> >Subject: [Cal_Boats] Stickum and Dunkum >Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2006 12:45:48 -0400 > >Acetone is not not quite the solvent we sometimes think it ought to be. >I know that in situations of greases, it does next to nothing. OK. I don't want anyone on this list to strike a match. I can smell the fumes coming out of my computer.
