Bob - It almost sounds as though you're saying the mast is deck stepped, but you can't mean that. ... We had a lot of leaking around our mast, and we couldn't get a boot to hold. So we used foam (not starbrite), which has worked well for two years and then cracked this past year and has started leaking a little again. We're going to try to solve the problem differently. We're doing new standing rigging, switching out metal for rope halyards, and putting in new instruments and radar, and since pulling the mast is part of this project, we're also having a custom stainless collar made which will take a good mast boot. Rather than "jump" on your deck to check for moisture, just use a top-quality moisture meter. Jim Williams "Spindrift" Cal 39-2 (1980)

Hi Jim; The mast is keel-stepped, but also has a welded flange that sits on the deck and is through-bolted, instead of having partners and a mast boot. What I'm going to do for now is to pull each of the bolts one at a time and re-caulk them, run a bead of caulk around the flange base, and finish up with a strip of boot tape over the caulk after it cures. This will be a stopgap for this winter but should keep things dry. bw ----- Original Message ----- From: James Williams To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, October 23, 2006 8:42 AM Subject: [Cal_Boats] Re: Cal 39-2 Mast Step Leaks Bob - It almost sounds as though you're saying the mast is deck stepped, but you can't mean that. ... Be careful when pulling the mast. The foam could be stuck real good. Don't ask how I know!!! If there are leaks through the seal, I've been advised to put more Vasoline along the top edges. Mike Kennedy Conquest Cal 40 # 96
