Tall rig/deep keel vs. standard rig/shoal keel
I am looking into the Lapworth Cal 39 and was wondering how the sailing characteristics
compare between the two rigs/keel designs. I know the PHRF values for each and know that
deeper keels generally provide better upwind performance, but I'm looking for more detail on
exactly what the differences are for this particular boat. How much is pointing affected?
Speed? Different points of sail? Performance under different wind conditions, particularly
under light wind and heavy conditions? Does anybody have polar diagrams for each version?
Anyone with sailing experience on both types of boats? Is the extra performance worth the
additional 14" draft?
Any information would be very helpful.
Thanks!
Dave
