In the good old days of heavy duty diesel engines, which were not too fussy concerning fuel quality, MMO was a recommended additive. [ according to MMO ] I also know of owners that add drain oil to their fuel, as this was SOP several decades ago. NOT! recommended today!
What this "mystery" stuff was supposed to do is unclear. I know of several boat owners that still use this stuff in their fuel. The big mystery is - why?
I contend that a dedicated diesel fuel additive, such as Stanadyne Performance Formula, which is specifically designed to improve fuel quality, is a superior product for diesel fuel. MMO is claimed to be an additive for many purposes, one of which is a fuel additive. How can it possibly outperform Stanadyne in this particular and specific application?
Diesel engines have changed CONSIDERABLY in the last few years. They are MUCH MORE particular and demanding concerning fuel quality, mainly due to emissions regulations. As time progresses, the latest diesel engines [ especially those with " common rail" type fuel injection systems ] will be even MORE demanding about fuel quality.
As such, "home brewing" diesel fuel with MMO will be a lost art. Good riddance. [ although it will be excellent for the engine repair business ]
I cannot recommend MMO for blending with diesel fuel. There are superior products on the market for this purpose.
Bottom line -
Use a REAL diesel fuel additive in your fuel, not some "mystery" product.
