SDYC Hot Rum Series
bertmass2006-11-04 03:40
Hey Cal'sters
Yeah!!! I am returning as foredeck captain in this year's Hot Rum
Regatta series on Cap't Bill's T/2 (Reggie take note). Last year 150
boats competed and we finished 3rd in our class. Mike, it would be
nice to see a CAL 40 in there.
Any CAL Boats group members in SoCal interested should visit the
Regatta site http://www.sdyc.org/raceinfo/races06/hotrum/index.htm

I had a funny experience in what I think was the Rumsey Series back in the late 70s. We
were entered in the Lipton Cup, then held by SDYC. This involved a new crew and we
decided to do the local race the weekend before the LIpton Cup. This was a race around a
rock off Rosarita Beach, an overnighter. I had my Yankee 38, which I had bought from
Gordy Frost who had a hot new Peterson 1-Ton. Well, Gordy and his crew, which included
Lowell North, were the defenders of the cup. We wound up third boat to finish, right
behind the new 1-tonner (and Carl Eichenlaub's 2-tonner) and scared the club so badly
they bumped Gordy from his own boat for the cup race. We won Class B.
I asked the race chairman about the trophy and was told that we were not entitled to it
because we were not entered in the series. There had been no mention of this when they
took my entry money. I guess they were really PO'd. Anyway, I've had a couple of run-ins
with SDYC guys racing. They are really upset when they lose.
We're not ready but I hope to make Ensenada this year.

Great story, Mike
Sunday we were getting ready for our pursuit start when I spied CAL 40 Persephone out there. I think Dennis Connor owns her or did. The race results showed the CAL 40 was registered as "Nozomi". We took 3rd in non-spin class 6. Results at http://www.sdyc.org/raceinfo/results06/hotrum1_res.pdf
