MOB Lessons learned

Randy Alcorn2006-11-22 03:01 UTC
I have retyped what happened and the lessons learned as one .doc file. In the word file, it turns out to be quite lengthy, so I didn't know if the email could handle it all. There should not be a problem, but if you have any problems receiving the attachment, let me know and I can resend in the email body. I have tried to answer all questions asked by all of you in this sailing forum and the sailing community. In completing this write-up, it is helping me deal with this and I want to be able to help other sailors in order to possibly speed a recovery situation, to learn from my experience, and to encourage them, should they ever find themselves in a similar situation. Randy, First, I applaud your survival instincts and your willingness to revisit the crisis. I hope you can get comfortable sailing again. ' Second, is it OK to forward your file to others? I know people who would be interested. Jon, I have no problem with that. That's what this is all about. Thank you very much! Randy-- Man, I am blown away by this. Excellent, excellent writeup, perfect level of detail. Lots of things for me to pass on to our crew for next season's racing. The things I will stress from this: - Importance of practicing MOB. We do this once a year on the raceboat, but we also practice it without the skipper--pretending he's the one OB. - Upgrading the whistles. I'm going to get a dozen LOUD sob's and hand them out to everyone. - We all have strobes on our SOSpenders, but I'm going to see if we can add a dye pack as well. - We'll stress the importance of doing a 360 scan for MOB's if you lose sight of them. We already dedicate one crew to pointing (not just watching, POINTING) at the MOB all the time, that way its a lot harder to lose sight of them. - Importance of jacklines and tethers. We always rig jacks when we go out the gate, no matter what the forecast. But we hardly ever clip on--kinda dumb. Thank you very much for this. Out of your ordeal, comes knowledge that will probably save someone in the future. If you don't mind, I'm going to pass this on to the sf sailing mailing list too. bw ----- Original Message ----- From: Randy Alcorn To: ca… [at] yahoogroups.com ; tc… [at] earthlink.net Sent: Tuesday, November 21, 2006 7:01 PM Subject: [Cal_Boats] MOB Lessons learned I have retyped what happened and the lessons learned as one .doc file.
