Re: Cal 39 Jib Track Position

Bob and all,
I'm flattered that Mike referred you to my Cal 39 site. At the Caltopia gathering in SF Bay in September we had six Cal 39-2s and all but one had inboard jib tracks. The one that did not, Zalika, owned by Klaus Dehn in San Francisco, had jib tracks on the cabin top. He did this so that he could sail very close to the wind with a 90% jib, which he has set up for self-tacking. Klaus used to use a barber hauler, but now in his 70s, he decided it was too much work.
On SF Bay, one really doesn't need much more than a 90% jib and a reefed main anyway. I've sailed with him, and I can say his 1978 Cal performs beautifully and points much higher than I can with my Cal.
Fair winds,

Jim, thanks for your input - you do have a great site. Here on LI Sound,
conditions are a little different. I have a 150% jib which I only very
occasionally have to furl down at all.

It is an excellent site, as anyone who looks has realized.

My son makes a good point although I don't totally agree. You need to do some polar
diagrams to see what works. Sheet the light #1 to an inboard track and see what the speed
is with a known relative wind and wind speed. If you do enough of this, or your sailmaker
has already done it, you can decide. You want to concentrate on VMG with an old design
like a Cal 40 or a Cal 39 (A more modern design). If it's faster, use it.
As I also said, this may be more than you want to know.
