I went to West Marine today in preparation for this weekends projects
knowing they would have to order some things and was shocked when I walked out the
door with everything I needed. Everything from sanitation hose (3/4" &
1-1/2"), vented loops, hose clamps, oil-lamp globe, head-lube and cabin heater.
Never say Never!

... or possibly Kelley Marine just down the street from there on 22nd - they had the fasteners I needed when the crummy job the PO had done on something crucial suddenly needed redoing.

Mike, for the bolts, have you tried directly around
the block from West Marine, the San Pedro Marine Hardware, they
may be a good source.

About a week ago, I commented on the lamentable tendency of West Marine to
be out of
stock in common fastener sizes. That stimulated some discussion.
I was talking to Jeff the
shipwright who is replacing the toe rail on the
Cal 40. He told me they would be farther along
except for the fact that
West Marine has been out of 5/16 bolts for several weeks. Then,
without
prompting from me he grumbled that they are always out of stock in 1/4-20
bolts
the most common size. This is a guy in the business with a Port
Supply account.
Secondly, the Mustang PFDs from Sailnet arrived
yesterday with the package damaged but I
haven't inspected the PFDs yet.
It would be difficult to ensure that they will inflate properly
but, if I
am in any doubt, I will waste a couple of cartridges. Better to find out now
han in he
water.
I took some more pictures of the toe rail progress
and of Roby Bessent's restoration of the
Cal 37, formerly Intrepid II.
I'll post them later today.
