Cal 34 Primary Winch Survey
kirkgrier2006-10-04 06:06
Hi Folks,
I'm curious what other 34 owners have for primary (genoa) winches. My
1975 2-34 "Footloose" has Barient 21 standard two-speed, and seem like
they might be a bit undersized.
In looking at the Lewmar sizing chart at Mauri Pro, a 33 footer with
up to 470 sq ft of genoa "should" be using a Lewmar 40. According to
my owners guide, a 150% is 425 sq ft, a deck sweeper 180% is 510 sq ft.

I have never been on a boat that had a winch that was too large, nor have I
ever seen a winch manufacturer recommend a larger winch than his
competitor's. On my CAL 2-27 I have Barient 21-33's for my primary winches
and they seem just right. I can't believe they could be big enough for a 34
foot boat.

Kirk and John:
In late '79, when my 1980 model was built, Sabre used Lewmar 40s as their primary winches. The (original) PO of my boat went for the upgrade to 42s and I don't find them to be too large. To the contrary, they handily manage the 155 we use.
Sounds like a good upgrade, Kirk.

Racor fuel filter problem / 2006 GOBR

Here's an interesting article on pre-1996 Racor series 500 fuel filters, courtesy of a Sabre list member...but wait...that's not all!
I spoke with the nice folks at Racor and they sent me a dozen spacers, so if you happen to need one, and you happen to be going to the Good Old Boat Regatta this weekend, look me up. If I've got any left, you're welcome to one.
I'll be aboard a C&C 27 named Amytar, along with Cal 3-29 Bay Breeze Skipper, Les Hester.
