I don't know, but am assuming a number here have read the stories? I haven't read the Aubrey books, but need to. Certainly, I've read all the Hornblowers and probably most of the Bolitho series... numerous times. Anyone else here found inspiration in them? Marsh

When you run out of those, look for Dudley Pope's "Ramage" novels, Richard Woodman's Nathaniel Drinkwater series, as well as his other three novels (especially "The Darkening Sea"). There are a few other scattered authors. Then there are the novels of Captain Frederick Maryat; not all of the novels deal with the sea, but he was an English naval Captain in the 19th century, so the ones that do certainly have the best claim on authenticity. <grin> Matt -- Matt Beland ma… [at] rearviewmirror.org http://www.rearviewmirror.org

Marsh, I have read the Hornblower series through more than twice. You will equally enjoy the Maturin Aubrey series. I reread the Hornblower series every summer while we are cruising the San Juan Islands. I haven't read the Bolitho series since I was a kid and just can't get into the Aubrey books for some reason. Marsh, My father turned me on to Hornblower and all of the others. I've read all of them, Hornblower, O'Brien, Kent, and a few more I cannot recall right now. Once done, I read them over again. They just keep getting better. Aside from Hornblower, Aubrey, and Bolitho, there is another lesser series of books. The Fox is the name of the hero. Very enjoyble reads in the early days when I had time. Aubrey (O'Brien) is the best written of all, and O'Brien's attention to historical detail is unmatched. All great reads. Alexander Kent's are just as good, in my opinion. When I was done and could force myself to part with them, I mailed them to a nephew serving in the Navy. Got him hooked, too. Since I no longer have time to read these fine books, I get the audio versions and enjoy them on the highways as I travel. Very enjoyable. Just reminded me, I owe about a $40.00 library fine on O'Brien now. Got hit two months ago for $30.00 on another O'Brien! Love them all!
