I have another book, Seamanship in the Age of Sail, which covers approximately 1600-1860. "The stays support the masts from forward and are named for the masthead they support." "Shrouds and backstays. Lateral support was provided by the shrouds and backstays. The lower shrouds 'clothed' the lower mast, and were set up in the channel, " This is an interesting book, it covers how things were done, parts and names, and how the ships evolved in this time period. If you go back far enough in time to the original usage, which is obviously what I was doing, you see that once upon a time, long, long ago, they were all just stays.
