SailNet Experience
aw… [at] bellsouth.net2006-12-13 14:27 UTC
Just wanted to let everyone know about a very favorable shopping experience. I was authorized by the Ship's Financial Officer to purchase a new, offset pedestal guard so I can mount my instrument suite that has been collecting dust for months and months. My Cal-33 has the 9.5" spacing, 1" diameter guard which is available from Edson and Navpod. I priced them at WM, Defender, that auction place, and SailNet/MarineNet, and called SailNet Sunday to check stock. Apparently they are not open on Sunday, but their phone system found one of the sales team on his cell phone. He didn't know if the item was in stock, so he told me to call back Monday. I did, they had the item in stock, and the person said "if you order it now I can get it out this afternoon." I did, they did, and it was on my doorstep last night when I got home. They still had all my information from when I purchased something over a year ago. I did not ask for any expedited, overnight, or special shipping. The total price was about the same as the auction place, and just over half of list.
No relationship with SailNet other than as a previous list member , this purchase, and one previous sales transaction.

Hi Al,
I also bought an Edson offset pedestal guard for my
Cal 33-2, but found that it took up too much space in
the cockpit. So I returned it and got a "straight"
guard from Edson which was taller than the original.
I mounted a Navpod across the guard (above the
compass) and installed three Navman control heads plus
one Raymarine autohelm control head. Seems to work
well so far.
I'd be interested in seeing pictures of your
installation when you finish.
Thanks,
Bill Terrell

Hi, Al -
This was a refreshing change to read! One of the things this list needs is
more information on where to go for good deals and good service. It amazes
me how willing listees seem to be to bash various vendors when they are
inconvenienced and how seldom we hear about great service and low prices.
There was study I read that negative news is spread by word of mouth nearly
four times more often than good news (The Secrets of Word-of-Mouth
Marketing, by George Silverman). The lack of response to your comments, Al,
would seem to support that. According to the study, this is because human
beings are hard-wired to spread news that helps others avoid danger and thus
protects the species (Stay away from that cave. There's a saber-toothed
tiger in there.), but that we are also hard-wired not to tell others about
things that might aid in their individual survival, because that would
create more competition for limited resources (Don't tell Urg there's a lot
of berries over there, because he might get stronger than us and take away
our women.) Interesting theory, isn't it?
Well, since we aren't competing for berries or running from saber-toothed
tigers, maybe we should share more of the good stuff like this to make the
experience better for all of us. This beats bashing any day.
Finally, has anyone heard of the Chinese buying groups that negotiate prices
for larger quantities of items by teaming up together to negotiate lower
prices for and making volume purchases of cars and household furnishings and
appliances and the like? I wonder if this would work for stuff we all need
and use like, say, inflatable PFDs and sails. I wonder if North or Air Force
or UK would give volume discounts if we bought, say, eight or ten Cal 25
mains.

I've posted some reports about where I was getting stuff for the Cal 40 restoration. That is
almost done. I've used Jamestown Distributers, Annapolis Performance Sailing and Bosun
Supplies plus Mauri Pro Sailing. All have shipped the orders promptly and the prices were
fair. I had a chance to visit APS when I was in Annapolis in October and it reminded me of
Land's End before they became a clothing store.
Internet shopping is here to stay.

Hi, Mike. I like APS as well. Also used Mauri Pro with satisfaction
(some items out of stock, but followed up quickly).
Cheers

Edson makes the offset guard in two offsets. One is 7" deeper than the
other. One of their ads says words to the effect that they have moved
the instrumets 7" closer to the helmsman. Do you know which one you
had? Maybe I should have asked on here before running out and buying
something. A friend of mine makes PVC pipe prototypes of such things
before committing. I was just in a hurry.....:-)

Al,
I believe it was the Edson 58" offset guard #1610.
According to the Edson catalog (page 36) it moves the
instruments 7" forward, which translates to 7" into
the front-side of the cockpit. That's about what I
recall during my trial installation.
At the same time I replaced the original pedestal
guard for a taller straight one, I also installed the
integrated cupholder top plate from Edson. This
netted two extra cupholders (on top of the three
existing ones)...which made the top-10 list of best
boat improvements, as voted by the crew :)

I put up the offset pedestal in my Cal 33 and it worked out well. I
put the navpod for a raymarine color display and two standard ST-60
instruments on the lower (tilted) part and three ST-60s on the upper
offset vertical part. It has worked fine. I got the pedestal guard
from NavPod also, and the tubing was wider, which is a good thing
because of the wires you have to run up it for all the instruments.
(Radar cable, GPS stuff, etc, etc)
Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures to send and my boat is on
the hard in Annapois and I am sadly enough in Cincinnati, Ohio for the
next 18 months.
Hope this helps.
