Kris, Mine is glassed over and I've never seen one, except in photos. I would guess probably a 15 hp anyway. Some members worked for Jensen, and they might recall. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "Krzysztof Szuszkowski" <krzysztofs501@...> wrote: > > > Whot is the most powerful engine fiting in lazarette of CAL 28 ? > > Kris >

Hi, Krzysztof. I'm thinking 15-18 HP, but a 9.9 is probably enough. I was recently looking for a new outboard for my CAL 25. Only 4-strokes available now. When we race, I put the engine below, so weight is important. Turns out that the only thing comparable in weight to the Nissan 8 2-stroke I had (great engine by the way) is a 6 horse made by Tohatsu with Tohatsu, Mercury or Nissan head covers. Same engine whatever the brand. Weighs about 60 lbs and is one cylinder. However, the sucker rattles like an SOB. I took and back and the answer was "That's how they run." Maybe the prop? Anyway, the next engine up is the same size and weight for 8, 9.9, or 15 horsepower. These all weigh about 110 lbs. Same block. I call them ETs because they have these monstrous heads over the skinny prop shaft. It would physically fit the stern, but weighs too much. If you can find a 2-stroke, you will have a more compact engine in the space. Don't know if you need a long shaft or not. Hope this rambling helps a little. Has anyone seen or herd of an in board motor being shoe horned into an early Cal 25 ??? I looked under the companion way. Maybe a hatch forward in the floor of the cockpit. Hmmmmm, the possibilitys. Hi Charlie. My research also led mi tu Tohatsu 6 hp, but I wonder if 6 hp is strong enough for 6 000+ lb. boat CAL 28. I use now Yamaha 9,9, however is tu big, prop and upper body, tu fit in boat's lazarette so is installed on the bracket. Very inconvenient arrangement. Dimension of the well seems tu be designed for Johnson 8 hp Sailmaster, but I don't see thous engines on the market.
