I found a snopes article on this very story, in my search for info about "Maiken" and her crew. http://www.snopes.com/photos/natural/maiken.asp Sure enough, her bottom paint was well 'sanded' and indeed, dirt and rocks are bad for coolant intake... (Duh.) Once upon a time, long, long ago whilst I was assigned to Navy patrol squadron VP-4 I jumped on a P-3 headed for a Search and Rescue off Pagan island north of Guam. The pilot, God bless him, saw the huge plume and decided to stay out of it. Good idea, ingesting fine pumice is thought to be bad for the continued operation of turboprop jet engines. He decided to fly kinda under it instead. Well... turns out all the heavy stuff (the kind that doesn't stay in the plume) was busy falling, right where we went flying. Things went bump and the FE panel lit up like a Christmas tree. The flight engineer said swear words I'd never heard before ... and don't think he even knew until he was inspired as he got busy shutting down engines. Damn plane only had four. The pilot did a 'wing over' as we fled the rain of rocks (think of the WW2 films showing dice bombers peeling off to attack). VP-4 crew 3, Chris Strayve, Bob Martin, and the others got control of the plane and escaped the rain of rocks and we limped back to NAS Agana on 2 engines. After we landed we discovered that by all rights one of the engines that continued to run, should not have been able to operate and we should have had the opportunity to practice escaping from a ditched aircraft. Not to mention intense practice at shark wrestling. Whew! Bottom line: pretty-yes, impressive-certainl y, dangerous-sure can be. For my money (and life) this type of event is best admired at a distance unless you are in an armored vessel! ~Jon Conyers Cal-27 MkIII #115 ____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ _ Communicate instantly!
