SD to SB in my Cal 25

. .2007-01-10 04:44 UTC
Hello fellow Cal boat-owners, question for those of you who are in California waters or who have sailed in California waters... My little Cal 25 is currently safely moored in Mission Bay in San Diego and could stay there for a long time because she feels at home there - but alas her owner (i.e. me) lives up in Santa Barbara and would like to have her close by ... Could those of you who have made this passage before recommend a strategy to successfully and safely master those waters in winter (yes, unfortunately I have to make the voyage soon - before March 1st - otherwise I risk losing my mooring permit in SB...)? Also, as a new boat owner I am more than just a little hesitant to make the trip by myself - so if any of you would be interested in helping me make the trip or parts of it please let me know ... (Planing on breaking it up into at least 2 parts and doing some refitting in Marina del Rey ...) Sabine S/V "Night and Day", Cal 25 P.S. Of course there is always trailering as a last resort so if anybody owns a trailer or knows someone with a trailer ... Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

Smart as the 25 is, Point Conception could be an all-day (or all night) challenge. Robert CAL T/2 'Elysium' Dedicated Crewmate ----- Original Message ----- From: . . Hi Sabine, We did most of your trip (SD to Channel Islands Harbor/Oxnard) last April when we bought our Cal 34 in San Diego. We overnighted in Avalon, and then onto CIH to make it a 2 day trip. I only had 2 days, so needed to make it work. We kept waiting for a window between storms, and had to scrub a couple times. When we got one, the wind was on the nose the whole way along with the next storm from the North, so we powered. SD to Avalon was about 16 hours, Avalon to CIH was about 12 hours. SD to Avalon we hit combined seas of 6-7 feet late in the day. CIH to SB is about 4 hours under power. We live in SB. In theory the 34 has less than a knot additional hull speed over the 25, so your times could be similar depending on weather. I'd want a strong outboard (I used to own a 25) and fuel capacity might be a problem. OTOH, I have some friends who have done SD - Ventura in Winter and been bored stiff with calm weather. And I'd be happy to use your mooring permit for a month or two :) Seriously, how have you found SB's mooring process? I understand that you have to provide the ground tackle, and the closest dink dock is at Stearn's Wharf - a good distance. Any concerns on the relatively exposed mooring field - East Beach right? We brought our Cal 28 down to San Diego from Oceanside in March last year. It was a first for us on the open ocean, and as it turned out, a first for us on the open ocean at night. The weather during the day was beautiful, but a bit chilly. The wind died on us and we ended up firing up our 9.8 outboard to make sure we reached Mission Bay by sundown. It dropped below the horizon as we entered the Mission Bay Channel. We left Oceanside around 10:00 a.m. (I think). We were the only boat out there for 90 per cent of the trip. We couldn't find anywhere to stay the night, so we headed back out into the rising tide and swells. Things got interesting and damn COLD and the dew got everything very WET! We froze our butts off! Going north will take longer with the winds and current on your bow. Oceanside's Harbor Marina would be a good mark for the first day. Sometimes the Oceanside entrance has some good swells, and we heard reports of boats surfing through the channel. We never encountered anything like that while we prepped our boat. Make sure you go far enough to sea to clear the La Jolla kelp. Get a real early start, and if you want to make it on time, motor. Almost everyone I talk to in San Diego making a run for Catalina powers all the way. We had three gas tanks and emptied one of them. This link gives you an idea of the tanks. I think two are 10 gallons and one is a 6 gallon. http://www.stirlinglaw.com/cal28/cal28photos/surveyphoto2.jpg From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com]On Behalf Of . . I wouldn't go around Point Conception, since both San Diego and Santa Barbara are south of it. Sabine, The weather this season has been pretty consistent: a storm or its remnants comes through then the Santa Anna winds pipe up. The Santa Anna winds are the biggest issue. For that reason I would avoid the MB to Catalina Is. to Santa Cruz Is. to SB route and harbor hop hugging the mainland all the way up for protection from significant offshore winds should they come up. Our Cal 2-39 Marlyn was based in San Diego for 13 years and we have been to Catalina numerous times and to Santa Barbara (city) twice and have stopped at many So. Cal harbors in all seasons. So, I would recommend MB to Oceanside to Dana Point to Newport to San Pedro to Marina Del Rey to Oxnard to Ventura (Chan Is harbor) or directly to SB. With short days, startout before dawn to have port entry in daylight. Looks like 7 or 8 days plus weather days for this low risk approach. Enjoy the trip. Do you plan to make the most of the trip and try to sail much of the time or do you just want to get the boat up there? Certainly, the 'motoring at night idea' is the best for getting there quickly in calm seas (although, I'd pass Long Beach in daylight due the the shipping traffic). I'd vote for enjoying all the harbors (Oceanside, DP, Newport, Alamitos Bay, MdR) and sailing as much as possible. This means you'll have to have light air sails for the typical mild winter winds. You should have storm sails too to deal with strong Santa Ana's and the typical winter storms although you can avoid those winds if you like and stay in port. But the advantage to the SA/Storm winds is that they blow in a favorable direction (NE/SE) for making good progress under sail. I'd probably skip Catalina since you'll have the Channel Islands at your disposal when you're in SB. Oh, and bring a space heater! I sailed from Long Beach down to Mission Bay in 1992 to check out the Americas Cup action and froze in port during one storm. I got a heater the next day and it made things very toasty! Fair winds and enjoy the sail. I really miss the gentle waters down there.
