cal 39 mast

There is minor corrosion at my mast base. There is supossedly a drain at the base of the mast to allow water to exit. I cant see where it is. I remived a couple trim pieces of the sole to see the step and clean it up but didn't see a drain hole. Any help?

If corrosion is bad, you may have to cut a bit off the bottom. That would require adjusting the shroud length and that depends on how much extra thread you have on rigging screws. How old is the rigging ? Mike Kennedy Conquest Cal 40 # 96 >

Rigging has been replaced piece by piece. Corrosion doesn't appear to be that bad to me. Where do I drill the hole, just a 1/4" hole close to the bottom? I know there is a casting there and I don't want to drill into that. I wonder if the hole is on the side against the bathroom where I cant see. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "mtkennedy1" <mtkennedy1@...> wrote: > > --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "Jeff Baumgardner" <jeffbum1@> wrote: > > > > There is minor corrosion at my mast base. If the step is like the 40's, there is a metal casting that the mast sits on but it has an X shape with the arms of the X fore and aft plus side to side. If you drill about 3/4 inch above the bottom and not directly in the center of the side, it should be OK. I have a 1/2 inch hole for a pin to keep the mast from jumping off the step in a capsize. That is an offshore rules requirement. If the corrosion isn't bad, why drill it ? Sounds like a job for one of those extendable mirrors. Jeff, The original 1971-72 C39 was based on the C40 so the mast step is as Mike described. The later 1977 + models have the aluminum mast base plate that sits on a larger stainless plate that sits on fiberglass floors. Somewhere between hull # 18 and 25 Jensen started using a full floor pan so there is a layer of fiberglass (and perhaps no ss plate) in those steps. You should be able to drill down straight through the base plate and floors right into the bilge without any problems. Jeff what vintage is your Cal 39? I don't see you on the Cal 39 list that Jim Williams compiled. If you can forward the HIN, boat name, location, etc we can add you. The masts that have some corrosion evidence seem to also have internal halyards. I don't, and when my mast was pulled for refinishing (at 20 years old) the base looked shiny and new and still full of metal chips from the original fitting out. There is no drain hole.
