Photo Link - Pitchpoling Under Golden Gate
Bruce Stirling2007-01-19 13:32
I googled "pitchpoling" and stumbled across these photos, which I am
sure some of you already viewed. For the rest of you, check it out:

I take it, this guy should have surfed more at an angle like a surfer
shooting the curl?

That is remarkable. I have never seen anything like that. WOW

Yes, it definitely blows.
Just one thing I don't understand - what was he doing
so close to and heading for the shore? Trying to get
to the beach?

That was last summer and the guy got too close in where there is notorious surf. It's a well
known place to stay away from. When we were doing a lot of racing in Newport Beach, CA
we used to hug the shore, sailing up the coast toward Long Beach. That keeps you out of
the south-flowing current. We would be right in among the surfers waiting to catch a
wave. They didn't like it but we didn't really interfere. We did have to stay away from the
fishing piers because those jerks would try to cast onto sails to catch them with hooks and
rip them. One sailor had his daughter get hooked in the face by one of those creeps.
In southern California, when you are beating up the coast to the west (It seems north), you
stay as close in as possible.

He was trying to come back into the Bay but was outside of the bridge supports, which you
see in the pictures, and too close to shore. Going back into the Bay, you stay in the
channel. Others here sail in the Bay and can add more than I know.

A pellet rifle. Or better yet, a good, airsoft gun, my K.98 does 515
fps. and plastic pellets... no evidence. :-0

Unfortunately, in Southern California the average pier-dweller is probably
armed to the teeth like everybody else on the streets. I don't even flip
anybody off any more...

Fort Point is a very popular surfing spot-as you can see, it gets a
nice break at times. Sometimes you can sail inside the South
Tower-it's shallower there, and if you're coming in the gate while the
tide is ebbing you get good relief in there. But as with anywhere, if
you are surrounded by surfers, that means that any minute you're going
to be surrounded by surf.
