Folks, this industry is moving incredibly fast these days. Here is a press release from Cree, claiming 131 lumens per watt for a white LED: http://www.cree.com/press/press_detail.asp?i=1150834953712 And here's another from Nichia claiming 150 lumens per watt for a white LED (blue with white phosphor: http://www.nichia.co.jp/about_nichia/2006/2006_122001.html According the the Cree release, "as a reference, conventional incandescent light bulbs are typically in the 10 to 20 lumens per watt range, while compact fluorescent lamps range from 50 to 60 lumens per watt." So we're talking about triple efficiency of fluorescent, and up to 15 times that of incandescent. Now that's progress! Alfred Poor 1969 Cal 29 #132, "Pentaquod" --------------------------------- The 16 lumens/watt that I remember is from a year or so ago, the bottom website in my last post even says that they're now up in that range, I just wasn't reading that part carefully. We're just talking about white here. This discussion on LED's led me (pun intended) to some questions. One of the websites mentioned earlier stated that the light source should be the same color as the lens, e.g., a red LED for a red lens, etc. How does this work out for replacement bulbs, particularly of the festoon type? Also, how many lumens do you need for legal running lights, and how do you tell how many lumens the LED will put out when connected to a 12 V source (i.e., what wattage will be used)? Hi Harleigh Dr LED has new marine LED light fixtures and direct bulbs replacement. This company will at the Seattle Boat show in Feb and I will check them out in person. The plan is for Cal 40 Kismet to go 100% LED lighting for long life and lower power usage. The marine catalog will help answer your questions. http://www.doctorled.com/ http://www.doctorled.com/DrLED_Marine_Catalog_0612C.pdf Have fun Keith ----- Original Message ----- From: Harleigh Ewell To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, January 20, 2007 2:26 PM Subject: RE: [Cal_Boats] Re: LED for running/navigation lights This discussion on LED's led me (pun intended) to some questions. Hi, I am assembling a Flying Tiger 10 meter for this seasons races. It came as a boat in a box! What a great experience! All lights are LED. I am surprised the nav station has a blue light. I gues I was raised with red lighting to protect the eyes at night.
