Off subject: mailing list problems
Bob Walden2007-01-24 17:58
Hi all;
In the last 24 hours, cal_boats has sent out 36 messages according to
the website, but I've only received 4 of them. And the ones I do get
seem to be several hours old.
To see what I mean, go to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Cal_Boats/messages?o=1
Does anyone else have this problem?

This is a problem that many Yahoo maillist users complain about. Yahoo claims that
the problem doesn't exist. The Aloha owners left Yahoo for just this reason.

I see replies to messages that I didn't get from time to time.

I seem to get all of them. Could it be a problem with SPAM settings in your
email program? If you are an AOL user, this has ALWAYS been a problem. AOL
has ALWAYS had problems with the real Internet and real email outside their
own system. Check your filters and make sure you never accidently
designated an email from the Yahoo group as SPAM in the past. AOL is NOT
the way to sail!

An old family friend who lived into his 90s had more jobs than anybody I
ever knew, working his way from his 8th grade education into a
white-collar supervisory position with a big crane manufacturer that
sent him all over the world. After he left the homesteaded farm in
Alberta (think sod house and early dust bowl), he eventually ended up
running big steam cranes for a while, back in the late 19-teens and
early or mid '20s. He could talk at length about the clutches and drums
and the many decisions that had to be made about weight, boom position,
and strength. When you miscalculated, you ended up with what the
picture showed (except in the steam crane days, there was no fiberglass).
My Dad had a similar experience, smaller scale, on his first boat. As
his practice began to prosper, he invested in a brand-new 13' aluminum
boat with a 15 hp Evinrude in 1955. He proudly piloted the new vessel
to the summer cottage. But seawall posed a problem. How to get the
boat up over the seawall, about 5' up? The solution was at hand. The
neighbors had an old construction derrick, a little thing with a manual
winch, sitting at the end of their seawall, right next the Dad's wall,
and they used it to lift their aluminum boat up. Go ahead, they said,
haul yours up. So Dad hooked up the 3-point bridle and started cranking
away. About halfway up, the old timbers the derrick was secured to
broke from rot and the whole steel device plummeted into the brand new
boat. The boat came out best in this case. It still has a little
dimple on the gunwale and another on a seat, but we learned that it was
a tough little boat.

yahoo has this kind of problem ALL the time. I am on, or own about 60
lists and it's a common complaint/problem.
