I haven't been up there in a while, and you would have probably noticed this but IIRC the upper shrouds penetrate the mast and are attached inside the mast to a part of the masthead fitting. Are these perhaps the holes you are talking about?

Thanks, I did not think about the upper shrouds penetrating the mast. These have to be those holes.
