stainless steel weld rust

grahamrevans2007-01-05 17:02
My stainless steel pulpit was damaged and I had several of the joints re-welded. After the first rain, I noticed rust around the new welds. Is this normal or was something wrong with the way it was welded. Thanks for any info someone may have. My other pulpit is probably beyond repair. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to get a replacement? I am in the Washington, DC vicinity (Northern Virginia).

It's done with acid, and you can buy an appropriate acid at the hardware store in the form of Naval Jelly. To test this theory, I had a horseshoe PFD bracket modified to hold a ring buoy. Took it to a local welder and had 'em weld on some pieces. Then I applied Naval Jelly to their welds and have had no rusting at all. I'm in fresh water, which may make it all less difficult. I think Chris is on the right track http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passivation I an EE and not materials guy, but you may be able to sand those areas and, with care, passivate it yourself. At work, I'm two doors away from the most amazing Materials&Processes folks, so if you don't get a better response on this thread, let me know. I'll talk to the 'masters" where I work @ http://www.ssloral.com/. They can solve anything. You need to passivate the weld. It's really simple. A good wipe with naval jelly or a phosphoric acid douche or spray will do it. Takes maybe a minute. Ace hardware has this stuff. \Rog Cal 29+ #1 Swiss Navy Cal 2-30 #77 St. Lori's Comet _____ From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of grahamrevans Sent: Friday, January 05, 2007 9:02 AM To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Subject: [Cal_Boats] stainless steel weld rust My stainless steel pulpit was damaged and I had several of the joints re-welded. Garhauer built the traveler for Moon Shadow 3-34, and did an awesome job! There are some photos on the 2nd page in the photos section, one titled "traveler" and one on the first page titled " view from the mast". I may have some other photos of the set up I can send if you need them.
