Our boom disappeared; please keep watch for one

jeribelle20002007-01-12 18:11
Our freshly-Awlgripped boom was removed 2 days ago from the yard where DH works (South FL). We are currently getting ready to put the remaining hardware on our newly-painted mast. Now we have no boom! Anyhow, in the midst of my varnishing, now I'm side-tracked with this calamity. We are self-insured (this is So FL, remember!), so we are just out. We're not in a position to purchase even a used one at this time. All that work, stripping hardware and prepping the mast and boom for painting, 8 months worth, as I've felt able, and now we won't be able to sail our Vida Loca. I haven't the heart to even go up top and put another coat of varnish on my new forward hatch cover and handrails. Sick. Please friends, keep your eyes and ears open if you hear of a used Matterhorn-white Awlgripped boom for a 42 foot Morgan sloop. Whomever took it would have no use for it except for resale or scrap, Heaven forbid. I'm going to check Sailorman this weekend to see if anybody has brought in one 'brand new' used boom to try and sell. Note, it could be advertised as for anything from 38 or 40 foot boat up to 44 or 46 footer. Thanks friends! girlsaylor

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Some Alpha Hotel stole the steering wheel off one of my salvage boats while in the boatyard. I have some salvaged booms, don't know exact size, but from a 24', a 30' and a 47' mast. What size and I'll measure. Also I have several broken masts that could be reconfigured for a boom - free. But they are up here in the Red Neck Riveria. Too lomg for UPS or FedEx, so would need to be trucked or come and get it. Sorry to hear of your lost steering wheel. Seems rampant in the marine industry. Just yesterday a guy was launching a brand-new inflatable on the ramp next to our slip, and commented to me that his was stolen this past week. Thanks for the offer. Do you have anything with the extrusion on the boom or mast, rather than a track? Found one on Ebay, but too large. girlsaylor --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, Tom Vandiver <bshmarine@...> wrote: > > Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Lucky they only took the steering wheel. Many years ago, a friend had his wheel stolen with the boat attached. He hired a search plane and found it pointed towards Mexico. 30 years later to this day, after sailing, he removes the wheel and replaces with a round piece of plywood that just spins around and the ply is concealed under a canvas cover. Maybe not so far fetched of an idea! Sorry for the delay. If you mean a groove extruded into the mast section, yes. I have a broken mast section about 15' each. The price is right, just come and get it. Since your boom must have been over 7', it would have to be trucked $$$ or...drive up to Pensacola. Was: Our Boom Disappeared; Now: Our Boom is Found!

jeribelle20002007-01-30 11:45
Dear Cal Friends- Our boom just turned up at the opposite corner of the boatyard, hidden under a pile of stuff slated for trash. It was badly scraped most of the length, where someone ran into it with something, probably using a forklift. We deduce that the perp tried to hide the evidence. DH put out a reward to whomever found it, and the yard foreman had the men turn the yard upside down looking for it. The painter tried to touch it up, but the paint damage is so bad that he is currently repainting it (our cost, again, or course). Just so glad to have it back. Tom, you are very kind, to make such an offer. Your broken mast section would have been wonderful, tho 2 feet shy of the original boom, at a whopping 17 feet long. If there's ever anything we can do for you, just give a holler. Thanks so much. To all for your concern, thank you. To everyone who made suggestions on where to look, and even made inquiries, thanks to all who helped in the search. A replacement was going to be very painful. And, I might mention that Terry, at Sailorman was on the phone calling everywhere he thought our boom might turn up for resale, either as a boom or as scrap. Nance and Underwood, our riggers, were so sympathetic; they were willing to sell us a new boom at cost (very tempting!) Lots of rejoicing when the mast goes up on February 5th! We drive the boat down to the yard Sunday, in preparation. DH's employer has already arranged a slip for us at the yard for a couple of days for this monumental event. Just goes to show the boating community is one very special group of people.
