Regan,
I'd suggest that you take an oil sample at your next oil change and have it analyzed (see site below). This can give you some insight into the condition of your engine 'innards' for only $25. My Universal 5432 has approx 3000 hrs. I get the oil analyzed every two years and, so far, all is fine. Practical Sailor has a number of articles on oil analysis if you want to learn more (you can purchase articles on line). My understanding is that a properly maintained diesel should easily last 5000 hrs before needing a rebuild.

In reading about the various diesels, I wondered if there were any
strong opinions about the Perkins 4108? Mine supposedly has apx 950
hours on it (hard to believe)and I am on a severe learning curve trying
to determine the real condition (I have my doubts due to significant
smoking when I throttle up). I noted another on e-Bay available for
$1500, allegedly with apx 360 hours from a skid steer loader.
Rebuilding the existing motor or trading in the block seems to be
+$4000 without a rebuild of injectors. Regan James CC36 #13.
Do you Yahoo!?

Thanks Dave - baby steps, I suppose.
