Last summer we headed out for a day sail and when we powered up outside of the mouth of the river we had a horrible vibration, shaking and banging, until it reached about 2600 rpm, where it smoothed out to just a minor vibration. As soon as we slowed it down it was bad again. We nursed it back up to our service/storage marina and my buddy Jay took a look. Turned out to be a loose engine mount, which caused the alignment to go south. We got it back in a day or two and it was perfect again. Not sure why it worked loose, but the engine was 3 or 4 years old, with about 375 hours on it at that point. We have a Yanmar 3GM30FV, with a dripless shaft seal system, new shaft and prop, all replaced with the engine. It sounded really expensive when it happened, but fortunately, turned out to be a fairly minor fault.
