Jeff,
I put in a vernalift muffler in 2000, model 1500060.
http://www.centekindustries.com/exhaust/product-pages/vernalift-fig-1-page.htm
This is an 8" diameter cylinder standing in end with two 1.5 " ports on the top
I put it approximately where the old metal can muffler was, between
the shaft coupler area and the quarterberth bulkhead.
I had to fiberglass a small platform to the hull for it to sit on
otherwise the exhaust ducting was the same.
Be sure to check and, if rusted, replace the black iron or galvanized
hot exhaust piping that attaches to the engine and is wrapped in
fiberglass insulation.
At one point mine rusted through and failed.
I would recommend replacing 20+ year old exhaust hose and all the
clamps while you are at it.
BTW, Why do you want to replace your main with a used sail? Would it
be in similar shape as your current one? It yours beyond repair?

Jeff,
We also have a Vernalift unit that seems to be working very well. It
has a side inlet and top outlet, but I'm not sure of the capacity.
You will need to size the waterlift depending upon the size of your
engine.
If you replace the muffler, I'd suggest that you inpect the complete
exhaust system and replace any components that are showing excessive
wear. A defective exhaust system can cause engine damage and exhaust
fumes in the cabin can be dangerous.
Be sure that the mixing elbow is sufficiently higher than the top of
the new waterlift to prevent any water from getting back into the
engine when you are heeled and that it is high enough above the
waterline to prevent back siphoning.
