I know those skinny little reefing lines along the length of the sail go through the grommets and under the sail itself, not around the boom, where the stress can tear the sail apart. I didn't know this till I saw a sailing encyclopedia several months ago.
They also illustrated getting the sail all the way down, reefing, then putting the sail back up. Having the sail part way down can make the process a struggle unless maybe you've done a good job of hoving-to.
