CAl 33-2 Yanmar 3GM30F Engine Raw Water Pump
Fixed the leak in the raw water pump today. Water was leaking
though the weep hole in the pump body. I enlisted the help of a
mechanic I worked with in a previous life. Problem was seals. For
benefit of others who may have to do this in the future and are not
familiar with the pump, here is some information. Pump requires two
rubber seals, one a simple neoprene or rubber washer called the
water seal. The second one is a more complex neoprene seal that has
a metal internal structure surrounded by rubber with a small spring
circling the collar part of the seal. This small spring helps
maintain a seal against the shaft. You must be careful not to
dislodge this spring when installing the seal. Also, as you look
through the hole in the rubber seal, it is slightly tapered.
Observe this closely, because it is easy to put this oil seal in
upside down. Pay attention to this funnel--place the seal in the
pump housing so that the shaft enters from the wide end of the
slight funnel. Both seals were about $10. The pump comes apart
easily, and no bearing puller is needed. Only special tool is a
hose clamp tool to remove the circlip on the shaft. In taking mine
apart, the oil seal had disentegrated into three or four separate
pieces. This was the root cause of the leak. The pump reassembled
easily without a press; put it on boat and no leaks!
