Cal 37 Questions
usa37322007-02-22 17:52
I know this is hair-splitting minutiae :-), but I have a couple of questions about Cal 37's:
1. I did a search and saw Mike K.'s post regarding the East (reverse) and West coast
(plumb) transoms. So I am assuming that the boomkin on the reverse transom is used to
get the backstay away from the mainsail leech. I noticed on Roby's boat that the backstay
is attached directly to the transom. Just eyeballing the photos it looks like the reverse
transom hull is actually longer (plus the boomkin extension) than the plumb stern. Is there
a difference in the mainsail foot dimension?
2. Is the mast in the same fore/aft location as a 40?
3. Were there any other differences between the 37 & 40 other than the stern being
shortened?
4. Would anyone have access to any of the original 37 specs? The YW listing for Roby's
boat shows the LOA as 36'-5". A stock 40 is 39'-4". It looks like the reverse transom would
fall somewhere in between LOA-wise.
If anybody has some info they can share I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Back in the late 60's I sailed a few times out of Long Beach, CA, on one of the 37's, Conquest (owned by Bill Poly back then). It was definitely "West Coast", and had the reverse transom, boomkin, and bow-sprit.
It would be very difficult to place the mast on a Cal 37-40 anywhere but where it is.
Conquest had no "furniture" in the bow, and it is my recollection that it had a balsa-core deck and cabin-top.

I think they went to a higher aspect ratio main with a short boom. I don't recall if the mast
is taller. In his restoration, he did move the chainplates inboard.

The boomkin probably was added to allow the same long boom. The east coast 37s are
actually 38s since they removed 18 inches and the 40 is really 39.5 feet long. Roger told
me that they had intended to remove more and Derecktor made a mistake. They were
pleased with the rating effect so left it as is and others followed their lead.

Yes but the bowsprit makes the J 18 inches longer. It is a low aspect ratio rig and, in the
case of the one west coast 37 I have examined, it moved the center of effort forward. I'd
think they might have some lee helm as the keel is no different.

The bowsprit, which some 40s also have.

I think that's right. The west coast hulls were begun as 40s on the 40 mold but the mold
was plugged 3 feet from the stern. I think all the east coast 37s were delivered as 40s and
modified. Roger might know something but this history project has an air of archeology
about it as the records from Jensen were all lost and the molds destroyed. The Yankee 38
molds were auctioned off and other boats built from them.

That's what I know. The fellow who owns the other east coast 37 is ill and I didn't have a
chance to talk to him. He wasn't the original owner anyway. Intrepid II, the boat Roby has
restored, was owned by Barry Berkus, an architect who is still around. I haven't talked to
him but might see if he has anything to add. I began this history planning to ignore the
37s but began to include them as it was apparent that some began life as 40s.

Is Bill Polly still around ? I note he co-skippered Vivant in the 71
Transpac and the only 37s to sail in Transpac were Intrepid II and
Quasar, Art Biehl's boat before he started the ULDB class.

I've not heard anything about Bill Polly for years. After he sold the '37 he bought and raced a Redline (C&C) 41, also called Conquest. Obviously a big USC fan. The Redline and the Erickson 39s were very effective here in SoCal, under IOR, as the Cal40 was not.
Funny ... I don't see many Erickson 39s any more.

I just across this in 48 North letters
"Cal 37, a Chopped Cal 40?
I was wondering if it might be possible, that you or someone at 48°
North, would know where I can get some information, about my boat.
She is a 1970 Cal 37 MK II her name is Pacifier II, supposedly she is
from the Cal 40 mold but with the last 3 feet of the stern removed.
Her hull # is 8. From what I can gather from her previous owner who
had her for 14 years, was that Lapworth and Jensen got into a legal
battle because Jensen was not authorized to build a 37 foot Cal, and
so after she was finished the mold was destroyed.
Thank You,
George Books
S/V Pacifier II"
I'm going to try to contact him.
The Ericson 39 looked hot when it came out but a friend bought one
and raced it. They were very tender and his burned to the waterline
one monring after they had finished a Whitney, I think San Nicholas
Island. The dry exhaust loop wasn't properly wrapped in asbestos.
