Bottom Paint

To all Bill and I are in the process of trying to see the best bottom paint for Allergia. We dont know what paint the previous owner used and we are woundering what to do. the local yard says be sure to have your diver clean your bottom before bringing your boat to have it hauled out.Better to leave the crud in the bottom of the harbor then to clean it at the boat yard,oh no would not want to put it in a plastic bag just leaveit in the harbor trashcan.Any advice

Hi-
We have always had the yard clean the bottom once hauled, before it
ever leaves the slings...curious...maybe they have some environmental
regs where you are as to the disposal of the sea life?
May I ask what yard you will haul it for you? Will you paint the
bottom yourselves?

If you have a hard paint (non-ablative) then it may be ok to scrape it
in the water. However, if its ablative, then I defintely would
suggest not scraping with it in the water... the paint particles will
continue to kill sea life for many many years. I believe, at least in
Washinton State, there is a very substantial fine for for scraping
your boat while in the water if you have ablative paint (10,000?). I
also believe all the marinas here are also required by the EPA to have
wastewater traps for catching paint and other chemical run-off from
the yards. Its probably cheaper to have the yard do it anyways - Only
takes a short while with a pressure sprayer and a scrap of wood or
plastic to get the tough bits. I can't imagine that hiring a diver
would be cheaper or easier than that.

I have a question...Is this for a race boat or a pleasure boat?...How
often will you take your boat out?...These might influence your
choice...Also, just published article in BoatUS Magazine, March 07,
entitled Bottom Paint Solutions. Luck to ya'.

I missed the early posts on this one, but if you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY love your boat, take a look at the Pettit VIVID paints.
The "white" can be a very nice look.

I have Vivid white because Practical Sailor reported that it was the only white bottom paint
that doesn't yellow. It is tricky to apply and expensive although Jamestown Distributers
have it at a reasonable price. It's been on two years and hasn't yellowed. I'm about to paint
again.

Bottom Paint
There are a lot good paints out there so get some advice first
Also I love my boat and it will get Trindad expoy paint next time.
For the new boat owner you need to know what is on the boat soft paint or hard paint.
You can not apply some paints on top of others over time they can flake off.
Check with your local yard and test there knowledge here in SF Bay Area we have
good yards and bad.
Also you will be asked what will the boat be used for?
And your budget?
When your next haul out will be?
ECT..
My 3 cents worth

Another vote for Petit Vivid White -> just make sure to follow the Petit's application
instructions. Excellent paint and the white looks dynamite.
Several long discussions on www.SailingAnarchy.com about Vivid with lots of photos.
