Perkins 4108

Regan James2007-02-06 19:36
In reading about the various diesels, I wondered if there were any strong opinions about the Perkins 4108? Mine supposedly has apx 950 hours on it (hard to believe)and I am on a severe learning curve trying to determine the real condition (I have my doubts due to significant smoking when I throttle up). I noted another on e-Bay available for $1500, allegedly with apx 360 hours from a skid steer loader. Rebuilding the existing motor or trading in the block seems to be +$4000 without a rebuild of injectors. Regan James CC36 #13.

Mine has about 1400 hours on it and had a recent valve job. Runs great, no smoke to speak of on startup.Starts the first try everytime so far(I just bought the boat a month ago) Leaks from the front and mainseal currently. My intake has a slight leak and needs to be tightened up. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "Regan James" <regan.james@...> wrote: > > In reading about the various diesels, I wondered if there were any > strong opinions about the Perkins 4108? Tom: You'll be happy to know the new Orleans west marine store opened this week and it truly is just about the only soul around in that neighborhood in lakeview. Tom, thank you for your response on this - I lost this thread and just refound it. I have put new fuel tanks into the boat and managed to prime the system without difficulty. There had been 57 gallons of fuel when I took it apart. The previous owner was under the impression that there was 5-6 gallons in that rusted tank - I was surprised. Anyhow - needless to say I had the fuel polished and the engine started and ran very well (much better than at delivery).I need to replace the filters (I am assuming) and then will do as you suggest. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, Tom Vandiver <bshmarine@...> wrote: > > > --- Regan James <regan.james@...> wrote: > > > In reading about the various diesels, I wondered if > > there were any > > strong opinions about the Perkins 4108? > > ***Very good old technology engine.
