New Cal 27 Owner... Soon
Susan Ingram2007-03-15 14:55
Greetings everyone. I am planing on purchasing a 73 Cal Pop Top soon.
I was hoping to get some "insider" info. A few questions I have -
*Is there an active fleet in SF Bay? Are these boats raced up here?
*Anything I should keep an eye out for, besides the usual when
inspecting the boat? I am planning on having a survey, but I would
like to know if there are any producion type problems that are common.
*Does anyone here have this model and what is your opinion?
Thanks for any help you can be. I am upsizing from a Tanzer 22 and
don't know a whole lot about the Cals.
Thanks again
Skipper Suzee

Hi Suzee;
Congrats. I just sold my 73 pt last December in Richmond Marina Bay. Which
one is yours?
There's no cal 27 OD racing fleet in sf bay that I know of but there's
plenty of Cal 27's racing in PHRF. No reason why you couldn't race yours.
The early cal 27's were very well built in my opinion. I'd look for signs of
rainwater leaking, deck softness around the chainplates, state of the
standing rigging, etc. I'd look closely at the keel bolts, and at the keel
attachment line when it was out of the water. and You might find a few
blisters but nothing to worry about usually. As someone told me at the same
point in purchasing: "any blistering a 73 boat would have done would have
been a long time ago."

Thanks Bob. I visited your site and it gave me hope! Very Nice! I am
pretty excited. The name of the boat was "Celebration" or something
to that effect. She is up in Stockton right now. Not looking forward
to the delta to bring her home to Alameda. I noticed there is some
activity at Encinal, I am at Island YC so that was great! Thanks
again!

Yeah, the trip down the river can be a pita in a small boat. Best to do it
soon. Summer can be a real blow up there, 30 knots plus sometimes on the
nose. Best deal then is to do it in a couple days and stay overnight
somewhere. Get some crew too so you can swap out and rest.
Have fun with it! Mine was a great boat, fun to single-hand, comfy for 2 at
anchor.

you'll love the upgrade. I have a T/2, same hull and interior, and a friend
has a pop-top.
is yours an inboard?
look for cracks wher aft edge of keel meets hull. not a tough repair if
there.
Most of the rest would be std boat stuff to check. bulkhead to hull
tabbing, deck fitting leaks, particularly around chain plates. unless iot
has been impecably maintained, plan on re-bedding all hardware on deck.
great boat!

Suzee,
I have a 72 pop-top, hull #145. We are the second owners, and have
had her for 11 years. Adding to the other's comments, I'd check the
chainplates and bulkhead attachment, and the deck surrounding those
plates. Also, they tend to leak (rain or wash water)a bit at the
companionway vertical hatch, bottom. Otherwise, they are good boats,
easy to sail, fairly fast and a lot of fun.
